Anyone really know how to get rid of gophers????????

We "had" this beautiful front yard, no grass, stones, and a rock river, with all kinds of cactus, flowering sage, a huge agave, et. We have lost the agave, the little b..guy ate up all the inside, I sure hope he had a hangover! 
Now he is working on our australian bottle tree, a beautiful tree it was, now it is very stressed 
Have tried trapping, putting bubblegum down the holes, even poured a bottle of ammonia and then bleach, thought I got him, but he popped up after a few days. Sounds cruel, I don't like killing anything, but he is destroying all the plants > My neighbor said that he and a friend of his, when living in Montana, tried to get rid of a gopher by putting propane down the hole and lighting a match 
"Caddy Shack" I guess was more true to life then I realized
Anyway, this is a serious question, if any of you have any ideas, or have had the problem yourselves and know the answer

No thanks, Essancay, we have the white flies, killer bees, mosquitoes, gophers, javalina, coyotes But you really can have the gophers!

OK. Down to business. First, my cats do like birds, they don't drop them on the doorstep though. They bring those in the house and I have to chase them down!!! Now, I remember having a bad skunk problem when I lived in the country, (got skunks in Oz?) and lime took care of them. Yep, LIME! That white powdery stuff. I don't know if gophers are rodents or what, skunks are feline, but the lime worked beautifully. If nothing else, keep them well stocked in lime and salt and maybe you can co-exist.

Pave your yard with concrete. Let the little buggers try to burrow through that. Cuts down on yardwork, too.

Sounds like a good plan MGiff! I am sure less expensive than the gallons of jalopeno juice. I'll try putting some in the tunnels, thanks

The little buggers, will tunnel, 3 to 6 ft or so underground, concrete they just burrow under

MGiff....no, no skunks....we do have all 10 of the top 10 snakes....which may just be the reason.....though it took mixy to handle those waskerly wabbits....

How about going to the local animal shelter and getting another cat. Maybe your old cat will get some feistness and bond with the new cat, making them a team against the gophers. If you get a wimpy cat you can just take him back and get another one, until you get a good one. Those Siamese cats are pretty tough, or maybe a tough alley cat will do the job. It sounds like your cat may be a little wimpy. Maybe get a third cat. Saving a few cats from extermination is a good cause in itself.

That's a good idea! Try a Maine Coone mix, they're good and fun to watch. Also, if you like dogs, the Jack Russell terriers are great gopher hunters!

We have 6 inside cats, 1 outside cat (she's the one that goies in and out, and catches birds, and 2 and 1/2 dogs. The 1/2 dog is a rat terrior/chichi mix, more terrior. There are no gophers in the backyard, because they dogs are there.There is no fence around the front yard, so we do not let them out in front. I'm trying the lime down the holes, will see what happens

Teddybearcholla, you need to get yourself a dax-hund aka teckel in dutch. (not sure what the correct writing is in english)
They are used to hunt rabbits. Because of their size they can get into the holes.
