Anyone really know how to get rid of gophers????????

We "had" this beautiful front yard, no grass, stones, and a rock river, with all kinds of cactus, flowering sage, a huge agave, et. We have lost the agave, the little b..guy ate up all the inside, I sure hope he had a hangover! 
Now he is working on our australian bottle tree, a beautiful tree it was, now it is very stressed 
Have tried trapping, putting bubblegum down the holes, even poured a bottle of ammonia and then bleach, thought I got him, but he popped up after a few days. Sounds cruel, I don't like killing anything, but he is destroying all the plants > My neighbor said that he and a friend of his, when living in Montana, tried to get rid of a gopher by putting propane down the hole and lighting a match 
"Caddy Shack" I guess was more true to life then I realized
Anyway, this is a serious question, if any of you have any ideas, or have had the problem yourselves and know the answer

I was weed whacking the other day and came across a massive ant hill. So here I was whacking the shit out of it until I got to the larva and then all I could think about was all the ant and larva parts I had in my hair!......I stopped and took a shower

If you have a co-op, there are tasty pellets you can buy that will kill the little buggers. Either that or, if you don't want to kill them, stick a water hose in the hole and just let it run. If that doesn't work, I would suggest a cat or 2, mine keep my yard gopher free. I do have to admit though that seeing a dead one on the doorstep first thing in the morning is NOT pleasant!

Tried the poison pellets, I think he just buried them. Also did the water hose, ended up flooding the low area, caught a glimpse of him on his little raft, margarita in the drink holder, and he was wearing sun glasses He was back within 3 days, have a cat, she used to catch them, but has now decided birds are easier! Doorstep treasures! Tried the whirl-i-gigs too, for noise, nada. Thank you for all the suggestions!
