This may be old news, but first I've heard of it.
On Friday, the FBI made public a far-reaching proposal that would require all broadband Internet providers to rewire their networks (at their own expense) to support easy wiretapping by police. If approved as drafted, the proposal could dramatically expand the scope of the agency's wiretap powers and raise costs for cable broadband companies. The 85-page filing includes language asserting that new services lacking a back door for law enforcement would be outlawed. The proposal is sure to be the subject of polarized debate, especially in this election year.

Oh boy...
Sput is sooooo tempted to bite here and "recycle" all the information I dug up on the funding for the research which Bush has used to brow beat what suites his views through on the rest of the world etc.
I'm walking away...remembering that there are non so blind as those that choose not to see...

Honestly, I believe that the best real weapon against terrorism and criminals in general is freedom.
By that I mean that there has to be a point where you will NOT go and, quite frankly, just rather die than give it up. You can catch a criminal in many ways, but if your also catching people who are innocent then it really not worth it.
Lets face the fact that some will get away. The reality is that people who do bad things get caught sooner or later anyway. Terrorist are not exactly liked by normal criminals and tend to get turned over buy them. Not to mention the fact that terrorist tend to destroy themselves and sadly the community they come from.
.... blah blah.. I am too tired for this stuff.

Sput! That is exactly what I thought! I have never really heard of locusts doing anything like that and now, all of a sudden, it's mentioned several times in the news! Call me naive (among other things) but it scared me! Thanks for the explanation, you and Jafo, it puts my mind at ease.
