Government rocks, or it sucks.

So uh, how do you all feel about government? I'm not talking about Dubya Bush or any government in general, but rather the fundamental idea of government. Socialist or capitalist? Communist or fascist? Federal or confederate? Mixed? No government at all?
And by the way, don't start any 'I hate Bush' stuff. We're looking for something deeper than that. A few of us got a good religion thread going a few days ago, so I thought we could get a good government one going too.
Let's do this thing.

Political assassination....highly under-rated....most definitely under-used.
If more of them went to work thinking that's how many think, they might be inclined to wanna do a better job?

Lack of money for a campaign, and I'm not old enough according to the Consitution. Believe me, if I thought I had even the slightest chance of winning any seat in gov't, be it the local, state or federal, I would jump on the oppurtunity.

Yep....a mate once said to me that if he knew he had a terminal illness that he would succumb to prior to trial, he'd assassinate the whole Australian parliament....and should I ever discover myself in that very position, my final act for the common good
would be to carry out his wishes..God rest his soul. Sadly, he was another statitic of many (thousands) of govt cutbacks to health services....and died in the waiting room of a hospital awaiting urgent treatment/attention.

First, government can be good. It is at times, when led astray by the need to acquire-wealth, stature, land, bad.
Second, not all of the last 20 governments fell, I assume the inference is to "civilizations" as in Roman, Aztec, ie lost. Mostly, these fell because of natural desasters and the failure to plan ahead. The Romans let their figureheads destroy them.
For the US, I would say that if our "Republic" hadn't been evolved from a feudal monarchy in which the aristocracy held the power to invoke policy, our desperate need for "political" campaign would not be as it is. The way I see it, law-making and wealth should NOT go hand in hand, as it now is.
As a whole, I think that our Democracy is best for the times. However, Jafo's idea of "tribal elders" sounds great, but would only work on a much smaller scale. Can you imagine New York City's "tribal elders" gathering for a meeting? That would be some 200,000 that are still able to make movement with their tired limbs. Also, in order for a "tribal" system to be in place, the whole of all governements would have to shift to the same, and still they would be in the same boat we are now in only on a smaller grouping scale. Meaning the groups that meet now for UN are the same as the ones in the "tribal" concept. We would still need international interaction. It's really all about growth. I don't think you can "rule", meaning enforce law in order to keep order, without a governing body. Someone has to make the law, someone has to enforce the law and someone has to break the law.
The problem is that those we choose, in a Democracatic election, have their own agendas. When they should be true to what they promise.

By the way, is anyone watching the Samuel Alito hearings? Someone actually asked him, 'Should the President have unchecked power?' 'Should the courts be allowed to prevent the President having unchecked power?'
Why even bother asking him questions if they're just going to be the same thing you would see on a high school government test? When a Republican is asking the questions, it's like a high school class. I'm waiting for someone to start handing out a Supreme Court themed word jumble, and then break for nap time. Good grief.
