At least Vista sounds better then Longhorn. Basically it stands for future vision. Longhorn made it sound like Microsoft was going really redneck or something. Yehaw, let's gets us un of dem operatin systems partner, (while there kicking cow patties around the yard), lol.

For me, I don't care what it's called so long as the OS works without a million fixes and Service packs. It might be nice to have a release of any Windows OS that they have tested extensively. C'mon Windows people, do it right. That's just my opinion, and everyone is entitled to my opinion.

RE Vista- what's wrong with using version numbers like a real program?

A new version number implies an upgrade. A new name implies a new program.

IOW, they can charge more.

I think the new name is actually fine. I'm like most people...it's bleh. It's neither exciting nor necessarily disappointing either. I like that it's more consumer friendly sounding. Of course, I would have went with anime inspired names for the new version.

Hmmm... maybe they can follow Apple's lead and call it something like LEMON ) I don't care what it's called. I just wish they would fix it

Think the name is terrible - in fact horrible to the extreme

Windows Crystal sounds better.

I can see the Linux and even MAC saying 'hasta la vista baby' to Windows.

Hey you guys, did anyone think of this: if Windows XP is Windows Experience, then maybe Windows Vista will be Windows VS
???

I think I'll wait until SP2 is released for it before I will give any more money to Billy Boy!

Sounds too much like a movie (filmed in vistaVision) format introduced in 1954. See http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/lobby.htm

Or like a railroad car (Vistadome)Designed in 1944. See http://www.vistadome.com/

Oh well, the ad copywriters must figure that they can do a lot with the name.

http://www.google.com/search?q=vista&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official

Now all these sites/organizations will probably lose the rights to their names, because you know that MS will claim that they invented, copyrighted, patented, and retroactively own all rights to, the "Vista" name.

Well...if it's anything like 'Uggboots' and 'Ugg' then yes, some corporate behemoth will ride roughshod over the little people and destroy their livelihoods.

I mean....demanding a Dictionary rewrite the definition of 'uggboot'?....For Christ's sake that proves where ownership truly belonged....bloody makes me sick.

Nothing to do with Microsoft, though.....and besides....there's probably a bunch of apple growers wondering if they still 'own' their orchards and produce....

Vista is a perfect start... the problem with it is the word WINDOWS.... call it Microsoft Vista since its going to be so different from windows anything....

First of all, the name Longhorn just got my attention faster that Vista. but after a thought, hey "Vista" isn't at all that bad. While the former name creates a feeling of something really fun and unpredictable, sort of an outback adventure , the latter brings out a cathartic, more emotional feeling . So in all, there is nothing bad about making a new name for the next Windows OS.

------------------------------------
afterthought... maybe they could name the next operating system after some god or something...maybe more myth-like....

Well...persoanlly I think the name is disappointing, I expected a simple but effective name.
"Vista" that would just sound awkward, I think Microsoft should of come up with a two letter name,
something like, 'Windows VI' that is clever and easy to use...really think of it, it could stand for the roman number 6,
or stand for something like "Visually Inspirant" There is all kinds of better names other than Vista, at that point I would of even pefered the codename instead of the actual name, I hope microsoft relizes it's a terrible name and decides to change it to something better
