Friday, July 22, 2005 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

On the bottom left on the home page of WinCustomize.com there is a poll being taken.  If you're a registered user of WinCustomize.com, please tell us what you think of the name, Windows Vista.  Windows Vista is the name Microsoft has given to its next version of Windows (previously called Longhorn).

really microsoft typical if you think that "vista" means View in italian, considering
the security level of the system sounds like a joke (or another autogoal if you like soccer),

afterthought... maybe they could name the next operating system after some god or something...maybe more myth-like....

I think this is an excellent idea indeed! Windows Zeus sounds great to me!

Interesting. My eXPerience has been that most people consider XP Microsoft's best OS yet, and don't share your attitude towards it.

call it Microsoft Vista since its going to be so different from windows anything....

How so?

Horrible name, very female

Why do you need a male OS?

I read this on a Linux website:

Actually rumor has it that vista stands for:

Viruses
Infections
Spyware
Trojans
Adware

Funny huh?

I reckon XP was a pretty big leap forward. It achieved something that was a logical advancement from the NT/2K and 95/98TexasJoe families, in that it reconciled what both families used to offer individually and become more user-oriented. I don't recall Windows ME was so voluble in guiding users with how-to's and everything. I don't see why folks suddenly feel like they got to spit in their soups or something. I mean Mac OS X is hot too but let's give em MS folks some time to lay their next gold egg so we can tell which shines brighter. I mean c'mon give'em a break.

And Windows 2000 was codenamed "Blackcomb", I believe.
I've skiied at both Whistler and Blackcomb, and I've seen that Longhorn cafe place or whatever in town. I like Whistler. Just don't get stuck atop Little Whistler Peak. It' scary .
Both are about an hour drive from Vancouver, BC.

Personally, I think Vista is a fine name. A bit legnthy, though. Nothing's really been longer than 3 letters (DOS,ME,XP,95,98,NT). Still, I like it. I've gotta get a Vista fan site out quick .

Sounds of coffee shop in the background) Steve Ballmer and various MS flunkies are comparing golf scores, telling Linux and Mac jokes, and generally avoiding the dreaded topic of coming up with a new name.

After that there was a long creative story...

That was the funniest comment and I liked the story! I like how everyone has taken the time to put their personal feelings about an OS name online. I think that Vista sounds like a product that's already been out but I can't put a finger on it. Oh well, it doesn't matter, Bill has already named it.

Are these the mountains you can see rising pretty high behind Vancouver's old rusty industrial port when you look out from Vancouver's Lookout Tower?

Longhorn was to wierd for a name.

I don't suppose it's any worse than any other 'Windows xxxxx' name. Unfortunately, it's not any BETTER than any other name. Better to have named it Windows Frontier or something, seeing as how it's a step further away from the DOS roots for the OS.

Like somebody suggested, switch the OS and presentation system names. Make Avalon -> Vista and make Windows Vista -> Windows Avalon. Windows Avalon sounds a lot better than Windows Vista.
