New Browser

I've got to get away from Internet Explorer but I'm not sure what browser I want. Can any of you tell me my options and what makes them good?

tjesterb: Thanks for that. I have my home page set as blank. When I have a bunch of tabs open and I'm done with them, I close them. When I'm done with the last tab, I want to close that website and just have my blank home page showing. Instead, the tab goes away, but the last website is still being shown. I realize that all I have to do is just click the "home" icon and there I am, but all the other tabbed browsers I've used (basically all the IE covers) will do this. There must be something I can add to some .js file somewhere which will state If all tabs are closed (or if the last tab is closed), display the home page in a tab.

Werewolf, have you tried Opera? I think it may have the kind of tabbed features you're looking for. Only downside is it's $39 if you want to get rid of the ads.

I believe I tried the freebie version, but isn't that just an IE shell too?

No I'm pretty sure Opera is a Netscape offshoot, although it does have a noce feature that allows it to appear as IE, or another type of browser to fool sites that are coded for those specific browsers.
I had Opera 7.2 but [ long story] it got erased and I didn't feel like shelling out again.

Dont download Opera, its filled with ads and its almost as nasty as an acual opera only the fat lady doesnt sing to end it all!! Just download mozilla if you dont like IE. I use mozilla and Slimbroswer which is a build off of IE. I did find this cool broswer, NOT based on IE that is only like 200kb, it just lacks features.

JCS, if you DL OPera you get the trial version, which has the ad banners. If you buy it [$39US] the ads go away. Opera is actually a very nice, feature rich browser and I was very happy with vers 7.2, until I inadvertantly removed it from my HDD. I currently am quite satisfied with Firefox, so I probably willl not pay for the new [7.5] version of Opera. I do, however, recommend it to others who like the tabbed features, as you can have Opera open up with a whole set of tabbed windows each time you launch. It also has a nice password Mgr, called the Wand. So if you don't mind paying a little, it's a great browser. Anyway, I think MGiff has already chosen her new browser and left us to ramble and rant on here.
MGiff, are you still using the SlimBrowser? [or was that the Slim Shady browser? Will the real Slim Shady browser please stand up?]

Note that Slimbrowser is also IE based.  Otherwise a very fine product indeed.

I read the FAQ section on the Slimbrowser page and it said that it basicly uses your existing IE engine, whidh makes me believe that you are still left with the same IE security problems. I realize that Moz/FF and Opera are not totally immune either, and as their popularity grows they may well become bigger targets for Trojans and other malaware, but the Mozilla community seems to respond much quicker than MS to threats. There is documentation that the open source community tends to produce more secure software in general and that the motivation to produce the best product, and the ensuing pride, as well as the checks-and-balances provided by a community developed product weeds out potential problems at an exponentially faster rate than within the confines of an earnings-driven, closed community. [That's not to say that there's anything wrong from profiting from your work, just an observation in the difference of priorities] If you have some spare time http://www.catb.org/~esr/writings/cathedral-bazaar/cathedral-bazaar/ and http://www.opensource.org/halloween/ make for interesting reading on open vs closed source development. These have been on the net for some time and htey pertain more to Linux vs MS than to browsers, so, forgive me if you've already seen them. As soon as my new HDD arrives I will be converting my PC to a dual-boot Windows/Linux machine, and of course I'll be running Mozilla brosers in Linux.
