You and the Internet

Friday, April 23, 2004 by Essencay | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

There are lots of different freeware programs and services that people use to protect and to learn more about their computer experience. Post a link to your favorites here so that others can benefit too.

Earthlink ToolBar
Earthlink has made their ToolBar available to all internet users, not just Earthlink Subscribers. It includes a Pop-Up Blocker and Google Search, basically the same as the Google SearchBar, and something new called ScamBlocker which as they put it:
''ScamBlocker helps protect you against phisher schemes, in which Web sites pose as your bank or Internet service provider in order to steal your credit card number, Social Security number, or other personal information.''

Robo Form is a great program for web login/pw storing.
It also allows you to save address info to quickly fill in any form on any site. I have been using it for years and have never had any problems with it, and as far as i can tell it has no spyware, etc.

Perhaps Citizen Litiz, you were thinking of: www.pandasoftware.com rather than the one that you gave. (I would create a link but don't know how to in this site)

AVG free edition is just fine for someone who can't or won't purchase a pay AV program. It's better than nothing.
And panda.com is some political nonsense site, no thanks. > THIS is the link to Panda's AV and security programs site. http://www.pandasoftware.com/home/default.asp

I use Antivir. I personally think it is better than AVG myself.

Eraser is an advanced security tool (for Windows), which allows you to completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully ed patterns. Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and DOS.

What is a BIOS Beep Code?
When you power on a computer the BIOS immediately takes control of the computer and performs the P.O.S.T (Power On Self Test). At the end of the POST the computer will play an audible 'BEEP' through either the PC's internal speaker of through speakers attached to the sound card (if you have a built-in sound chip). If the POST completed successfully without detecting any problems with then system will play a single short beep to let you know the test is complete and the computer will continue to startup and load the operating system.

Don't Fear the Registry If you haven't spent much time in the Registry, you can easily be cowed by it. At first glance, it's a maze of apparently incomprehensible settings. In fact, though, there's a method to the madness. http://hacks.oreilly.com/pub/h/658

Google Search without the GoogleToolbar

http://www.google.com/options/buttons.html Adding Google Browser Buttons to your personal toolbar gives you access to Google's search technology, without taking up extra screen space. Browser buttons let you search the Internet simply by highlighting a word (or phrase) on any web page and clicking the Google Search button. And it does work with WinXP though they don't mention it

Couple of free commandline virus scanners:

F_Prot: http://www.f-prot.com/products/

McAfee CleanBoot: http://www.networkassociates.com/us/downloads/beta/cbt/cbt.htm

They come in handy when you happen to get one of those "anti-virus virus" infections.. the ones that disable your AV before it loads. I usually run a scan with one about once a month, just to be sure. (Yeah, I'm a little paranoid about virus infections.... but, I deal with removing virii and spyware everyday for a living... ya' gotta' expect that. hehehe)
