You and the Internet

There are lots of different freeware programs and services that people use to protect and to learn more about their computer experience. Post a link to your favorites here so that others can benefit too.

Earthlink ToolBar
Earthlink has made their ToolBar available to all internet users, not just Earthlink Subscribers. It includes a Pop-Up Blocker and Google Search, basically the same as the Google SearchBar, and something new called ScamBlocker which as they put it:
''ScamBlocker helps protect you against phisher schemes, in which Web sites pose as your bank or Internet service provider in order to steal your credit card number, Social Security number, or other personal information.''

This isn't really a freeware site or much, but you can tottaly make your Windows XP run a little smoother:

http://www.blackviper.com

It was on TechTV, and I looked at it, and did a couple things that it says I could do, and my Windows XP runs excellent.

I prefer to be proactive and keep the stuff of my PC in the first place. The main tool I use is ie-spyad. Which is available at http://www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/resource.htm

This is a tool to add known malware sites to the restricted sites zone within Internet Explorer. This uses the security available with Internet Explorer to prevent these sites installing software on your PC without your permission.

Its free, its regularly updated, its the largest list of malware sites available and it doesn't hog resources as it doesn't run as a program in the background. Since using ie-spyad I haven't had even a single tracking cookie on my PC. It gives me the benefit of ActiveX from friendly sites and the protection needed from malware sites i.e. the best of both worlds.

I run ad-aware scans to check, but they always come up clean now.

Also if you have one of Norton's firewalls check out AGNIS at the same site. This will add loads of ad blocking to Norton's firewall to improve the ad blocking features in these products. AGNIS is also available for ad-shield.

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this, as it is not a program to protect your puter.....but it is freeware, and kind of neat painting program to play around with!

IE Spyad
IE-SPYAD is a Registry file (IE-ADS.REG) that adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once this list of sites and domains is "merged" into your Registry, most marketers, advertisers, and crapware pushers on the Net will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on you.

Since May 1998, close to six years (!), the NOD32 Antivirus System has been the only product in the world that has not missed a single “In the Wild” virus in the rigorous testing conducted by the antivirus industry ‘bible', the Virus Bulletin ( www.virusbulletin.com ).

Some wonderful member of WC, I can't remember who provided me with this link a while back http://www.sysinternals.com Sysinternals. They have a bunch of neat little utilities. My favorite is PageDefrag and like the name implies it defrags your paging files and registry hives.

I stumbled across this one...haven't tried it yet but it seems pretty neat...you can also make custom syntax files which would be great for opening up a skin text file (uis) on the fly in this vs. notepad.

Crimson Editor http://www.crimsoneditor.com/

Crimson Editor is a professional source editor for Windows.
This program is not only fast in loading time, but also small in size (so small that it can be copied in one floppy disk).

While it can serve as a good replacement for Notepad, it also offers many powerful features for programming languages such as HTML, C/C++, Perl and Java.

Syntax Highlighting for HTML, C/C++, Perl, Java, Matlab and LaTeX. Also, it can be extended for other programming languages based on custom syntax files.

Other features include undo/redo, user tools, macros, spell checker and more.

There is a very simple and fast way to clear out these index files.

Log off all users.

Log on as Administrator.

Open search and click on ''''All files and folders'''' on the left side.

Under ''''More advanced options'''' make sure that ''''Search hidden files and folders'''' is checked.

In the ''''All or part of the file name'''' section type in "index.dat" (without the quotation marks).

After the search is complete, delete everything possible. (you won''''t be able to delete the files that have been generated by the ''''administrator'''' since you are logged on as ''''administrator'''' but you can delete everything else safely......I''''ve done it, and continue to do it.

Oh, and I also run Window Washer http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/windowwasher/index.php by Webroot. Takes care of all the other unwanted files on the system.

The Journeyman....I removed the link [as requested] as it's probably preferable to not link to spyware or browser hijackers, etc....
