Screenshot Protocol

Monday, October 20, 2003 by Jafo | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Ideally, if one remembers them, try to include the names of the skinner/s involved in the works being displayed.

More important, however...if the wallpaper being used is NOT your own work it is necessary to obscure it with windows, etc. to ensure the screenshot cannot be downloaded and 'adjusted' to become a wallpaper alone.  Often it is quite a simple task to 'extract' the wall itself which classifies as 'distribution' of the artwork without the Author's consent.....and can therefore be a copyright issue.

Just try to protect the rights of the artists whose work you like so much that you are displaying it/them on your desktop....

I agree about your first point Paul, it's really frustrating to see a cool screenshot, only to discover that the person who uploaded it gives NO details of the skins or artists.

(by the way, did you mail my prezzy yet?? didya didya huh?)

That's cool, but where should that information be displayed? I can't find a place in my profile to type that info.
Or did you mean just for the screenshots section?

The skinner info for the screenshot section...but both that section AND your personal desktop should use partly obscured walls....

It took just 5 minutes to extract a viable wallpaper from this submitted screenshot.....the resulting image is reduced and shown inset.

This is why it is important to obscure a wall sufficiently to prevent its distribution in this fashion.

I have gleaned quite a number of great images this way....without the artists' consent....in fact they'd likely have absolutely no idea their property rights were being violated.

If I can do it in 5....I'm sure others could do it even quicker.....

I submited this wallpaper with and without the logo, but it "vanished" and i guess not because of the servers but being simply rejected.
I was wondering why would that be.... ? not good enough?
(I own all the art, names and companies that might have appeared on the image)
(and i did erase the logo for the second submision)
soo.. I just wanted to share the image with you...

Some 'wallpapers' tend to be promotions or advertisements....often a website or similar....and are usually rejected for that reason. Advertising material is usually only of appeal/interest to the creator, not the non-customer....

You know... when I uploaded this shot that Jafo is using, it was a goof. I thought really that I had a rainy and sysmetrix loaded at the same time. All the moderators had to do was email me and ask me to resubmit. I would have done that gladly and I understand copyright issues and the reason this screenshot should have been rejected. ALTHOUGH... it seems what's good for the goose is not always good for the gander here. I have seen screenshots with nothing but wallpaper to grab.. and I have seen copied wallpapers submitted that can be found from Webshots.
I won't sumbit anything else... and probably won't redo my subscription with this site.
Oh... and btw Jafo... you forgot to include names of skinners information with your screenshot.

mfaccone...you were emailed about this screenshot...I have the copy, as do all the admins.

Your 'goof' was caught FOR you....

As for walls uploaded that are not the property of the uploader to do so....the idea is to notify the site admins so that it/they can be dealt with.

It's not a case of double standard, but a case of what gets noticed gets caught.

And btw....if you mean the screenshot above.....well I have no idea for sure whose it originally was....and it's intended as an example of wall extraction, not as an example of an appropriate upload.

If you mean MY personal screenshot....I don't need to post the skinner's name/s.....all the work is my own.

Oh...and by the way....you will notice that at NO TIME was the uploader referred to by myself or anyone else, so you were not being dragged over the coals about it at all.

Did you use this server to email it? Cause I didn't receive one. All I know is I submitted and waited a day or so.. knowing you have had server problems as of late.. then bam... Jafo has a screenshot of what I submitted saying this is how not to submit.
But ok... could be server problems why I didn't receive the email that all you admins seem to have copies of... still, using it the way it was used IMO is wrong.
