Screenshot Protocol
Monday, October 20, 2003 by Jafo | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
Ideally, if one remembers them, try to include the names of the skinner/s involved in the works being displayed.
More important, however...if the wallpaper being used is NOT your own work it is necessary to obscure it with windows, etc. to ensure the screenshot cannot be downloaded and 'adjusted' to become a wallpaper alone. Often it is quite a simple task to 'extract' the wall itself which classifies as 'distribution' of the artwork without the Author's consent.....and can therefore be a copyright issue.
Just try to protect the rights of the artists whose work you like so much that you are displaying it/them on your desktop....

| Docx... yeah but it had a rainy attached so it did block some of the wall. When I took this screenshot I thought I had the rainy and sysmetrix loaded... just a matter of not really paying attention to what I was doing I guess. Having it declined wasn't a big issue with me... but coming here and seeing it broadcast as a reason why rejection just slapped me in the face. Dianekk... its not Jafo's desktop.. |

| Oh...get a grip....this is a simple, gentle reminder of correct procedure....no names were named, ergo no 'slap in the face'. Next time just preview your own uploads and lessen the work for the admins...and we ALL will be happy. |

1. I didn't at any time accuse you of plastering my name all over the net.
Actually I could give a rats a$$ if you did or not.
2. I said I didn't receive any email notification that this screenshot was accepted or rejected.
It wasn't until I opened the screenshot section that I saw it. I then realized it was rejected and for what reason...
And THIS is the reason I thought you uploading it in that way was wrong. I should have been notified.
As with all art, mods, skins, and I would stretch even as far as screenshots that they are owned by the uploader until
proven otherwise. Maybe not the skin used in the screenshot, maybe not the wallpaper used in the screenshot...
or anything else... but the usage of all put together in a screenshot should be give as much respect as you would one
of your own mods or windowblinds.
3. I really don't care. I just had my opinion that it was wrong to use mine, or anyone elses screenshot like that
without the persons permission.
I didn't mean for you to get so ANGRY. Geez.. take a pill or something.
4. I won't further this thread as it won't make a bit of difference anyhow. And I deleted all my other screenshots from this
site... and I hope they won't be used for any purpose in the future.

But just remember folks... if you submit something and it gets used by someone else.. its ok. But if you use something that belongs to someone else watch out.

yeah, you are right, when you submit something and somebody else is using it you are 'sharing' something, if you are using something from someone else you are 'stealing'
"But just remember folks... if you submit something and it gets used by someone else.." full library you have btw

Furthermore, there's a significant qualitative difference between an Admin illustrating a potential problem using a screenshot that was uploaded to this site (for the express purpose of being viewed by others) and someone "ripping" another's work or distributing it without permission.

Subject: WinCustomize: Upload Notification
Dear mfaccone,
Thank you for your recent upload of your Infinity for ScreenShots.
Unfortunately your upload has not met our guidelines and has been rejected. Check this thread.... https://www.wincustomize.com/msgboard.asp?BID=WC&id=202507#202524
It's important to partly obscure a wallpaper in a screenshot.
However we do look forward to your future submissions.
Sincerely,
The WinCustomize Staff

Of course... I did mention that I hadn't gotten it... probably due to server problems from where the email originated from.
I know.. I am an a$$hole, jerk, smarta$$, and all the other names you can fling... I get paid to be that way.
And I don't like this dancing around the issue... never got a straight answer... reason I want my subscription cancelled. Consumer option.

mfaccone...I just wasted half an hour of my life responding to your email.....it's considered polite to at least have a valid one that does not return 'undeliverable' [twice].
If you are curious provide a valid address and I'll resend.

Oh...for any third party, just to clarify....in #35....the 'you' referred-to is rhetorical, it is not 'me'.

Yes....third one got through.
Just remember that a 'screenshot' is not a skin, or an artwork, it is a screen-capture of a desktop in action, and in this case of another person's art.
I do not care about your screenshot, or whose it might be, and the idea that my posting this thread was in some way taking credit for your screencapture is quite frankly ludicrous, if it weren't absurd, but WE DO care about the artist's property displayed within and publicly distributed without appropriate consent/s, hence its rejection.
This is a painfully simple [I thought] concept to understand.
Bottom line is that when at all possible, copyrights need to be respected.

I will say this only once [more]....at NO time was you or your name or anything even remotely related to YOU EVER mentioned or referenced, so this is EXACTLY NOT wrong.
ANYONE's upload of similar format could have been used....just happened to be this one....and the content was entirely appropriate for the subject matter of this thread.
