Windows 11 - Not For Me...

Tuesday, December 7, 2021 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

So over the last month I have tried Windows 11 about 5 times. Each time I tried it for a few days. My computer is less then a year old and meets all the requirements to run 11. However, it's just not ready for me to use as a daily driver. Here's why:

* System colors. The taskbar is set in 11 to be all black. Yet it never shows up as a true black like in 10, it's always just one or two shades lighter. Using the latest video drivers from Intel for my Intel 610 integrated graphics card did not work. The system has no issues showing a true black in 10.
*Taskbar icons. On 10 the 9 apps I have pinned to the taskbar show up as super detailed high definition icons. On 11 they look like 16 bit video game quality icons, grainy, and out of focus. This by far is my biggest gripe.
* Fonts. I usually set the fonts to large on 10 because in my old age my eyesight is going south. In 10, everything is made bigger. In 11, even with the font upsized, the clock, trash bin context menu, and desktop text is so small I can't read it without turning on a magnifying assistant.
* Folders. In 10 the contents of a folder or shown as thumbnails. 11 did away with that. While I am sure I could get used to it over time, I much prefer the folders in my File Explorer to show a thumbnail or two to give me a hint of what's inside.
* Boot times. 11 boots quick, but going from the login screen to the desktop takes 3 times longer then 10. Not really a deal breaker, just very aggravating.
* Start menu. I have no use for a Start Menu that just has pinned apps and recent documents. In 10 I get rid of the live tiles and shrink the app list down so when I click on Start all I get is a list of apps. I did solve this issue by purchasing Start11.

So I'm just gonna use 10 for the foreseeable future until they fix the issues I have. I assume down the road a newer version of 11 will work better along with an updated video driver.

Is anyone else sticking to 10?

So WB10 works on Windows 11 22000 ?

naroon1,

I have been doing quite a bit of testing on it in regards to adjusting transparency, color darkness, and even font. I have also been tinkering with explorerpatcher to see what happens as things are adjusted on that end.

My findings are that any skin modification that I have done works just fine with the file explorer. I have not had one single crash as long as the settings are adjusted as I have posted in explorerpatcher.

I have also found one variable that is causing the explorer crash...

In the explorerpatcher options under file explorer options

Disable the windows 11 command bar* absolutely needs to check marked to yes.

In fact the file explorer crashed almost every time when the command bar was active, only when it is marked as inactive has windows blinds worked.

So, command bar and windows blinds appear to be the issue in my testing

I have got windows blinds to work with windows 11.

explorerpatcher https://github.com/valinet/ExplorerPatcher is required to make this happen

once installed command bar must be disabled under the options

My best guess would be yes. I would actually be surprised if it didn't when using the same method. Someone else's turn to test it out though

Quoting Jafo,

But you are right...skipping Vista was 'a thing' ...particularly for me...when I couldn't find a modem driver...so I could get online...and update the....wait for it....modem driver.

Oh boy, I had that problem wiped from my brain. And back then that was a big problem. Usually we had one pc, no smart phones yet and 2 options.

1. Wait a few days until you could get to another pc and hope they have "open" internet access or

2, and my personal fate, take out your old OS CD's and completely reinstall the old OS. Of course there was also several driver CD's that also needed installed separately to get the PC running. Next step search for driver's and hope and pray you find the correct one and save it. And then reinstall the new OS. Now if you have the correct driver you now have internet access. But if for some reason it is the wrong driver then repeat this whole process...

God you just brought back some memories, lol! I remember those days well.  I finally threw away my install discs for WIndows and Microsoft Office for a computer i probably haven't had for 15 years when I cleaned out my storage this summer. Remember the free discs in every store for Netscape and AOL? Now modern problems for me is every darn thing in my house is connected to the web. If my internet goes down nothing works!

Using the method posted by PhoenixRising1 , i can confirm many older masterskins created for older OSs will work, still not able to completely solve the transparency issue but feel it may just be a setting i am missing in one or more of the 3 Programs

Start11

Explorer Patcher

Windowblinds

Hello, I tested windows 11 and I can boldly say that I am still using windows 10 because windows 11 looks artificial and there is no such climate for me, but unfortunately in 3 years we will all have to have it

I didn't mind the look of 11 so much, in fact I sort of liked it, but sadly the machine I tested it on wasn't able to run it properly.  There was a lot of lag and unresponsiveness so I switched back to 10 for ease of use and a speedier machine.

Well before then my main PCs will be back on line and I will be able to run 11 more efficiently.  They would have been up and running sooner than this, but I've had some major distractions and haven't had a chance to work on my new desk setup where they will go.  Hopefully in the next few days.

Windows 11 will and does divide peeps as i am sure earlier OSs did going back years, but as you have said most of us will move to it in 3 years, hopefully when WB11 is ready, you can at least make it look and feel familiar. I have been using the OS now daily and with a few privacy issues closed down, stopping MS spying on us, i find it to be fine with no serious bugs, so far (for me).

In my opinion, Windows 11 looks like android, which I like.   Hell, I may not even use WB11 when/if it ever comes.

I make 11 look pretty good, if I say so myself.

Not exactly "fully" working, unless you can solve the transparency issue.  I know that Curtains has a similar issue. Titlebars are transparent.....eeewwwwwww.

I think the main reason Microsoft launched Windows 11 was to get people excited about PC's again. Year after year people are getting new 1,000 dollar phones but are very rarely buying new pc's.

I can see some of the people with older pc's having negative views as Windows 11 offers less or even nothing at all to older pc's.

I have a 2 in 1 device myself and can say Windows 11 absolutely does bring improvements. Windows 10 tablet mode was stupid, I much prefer the tablet function maintaining the windows design found in 11. So that is just one improvement.

Also a lot of newer tech trends just works better. HDR screens, integration on things such as gaming and several other things that are overlooked by people that just don't have the newer tech yet. In a lot of instances it will be the new pc's that take advantage of what windows 11has to offer

The start menu does have some controversy. But who cares about that anymore, just look at all the work that has been put into start 11. Easy fix at this point.

Ever since Start 8 Stardock saved us from the MS insanity.  Being able to run a new OS with a comfortable/recognizable GUI was so well received the proggy sold quite well, [thanks, MS].

Clearly MS wants Stardock to continue to 'prosper' as it continues to mess with things that weren't broken.

Fix the bloody kernel, by all means...update it to the wazoo, but leave the interface alone.  Stop reinventing the wheel.  I t was right already just being round...

Does start11 restore jump lists to the pinned start menu icons? What a boondoggle to eliminate that feature...

True there. Honestly, I probably would have skipped Windows 8 all together if not for start 8.. Are you sure you guys arent working for Microsoft as the second half of their OS's?

Sometimes I think they've just left the GUI to those who know it better.  By the time 8 came along it was evident they had no clue....

In more 'enlightened' times for MS, Stardock was a Gold Certified Partner.....then I think they decided they could do it all better....

....how'd that work out for them? ....

Please do not say you may not need or use WB11 RedneckDude , if that caught on, it would be a sad day for the Master Skin creators, a world with No Windowblinds, no that can not happen, it's been on my go to Programs list since XP, pretty please, change your mind.

I seriously doubt my use, or lack thereof, is going to sway anyone.  I just happen to be on the side that likes 11, and I make it look pretty good, I think.
