When will this site get fixed?

Wednesday, October 1, 2003 by whoredom | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Ok so the site looks pretty broken at the moment, wouldnt it be a good idea to post a message on the front page of the site explaining what is going on? If any new people come to the site now, they just think it is a site put together by some 15yr old in his bedroom with broken links all over the shop. Surely this will eventually have an effect on Stardocks sales.

Looking at what? i have read many of the messages on the board, and this problem was supposed to be fixed days ago. There seems to be no deadline for this work to be finished. 'be patient' is fine for the people that use this site on a regular basis, but for new potential users this is all a disaster. This has all the professional attitude of 'site currently under construction' on a page. Can you imagine submitting a half finished skin to a site? so why upload a half finished site to a server? Whoever is in charge needs to kick someones ass in gear. Yes people can wait.. but this just doesnt look good. What does the state of this site say about the Stardock products themselves?...

A 15 year old who can code a complex asp-driven site?

for some reason that commercial where the guy is twisting the hose spray handle onto the hose with the water running ..." Airconditioning Boss? I'll fix "... poped into mind

A complex asp-driven site that works? It can be as complex as you like, but if it doesnt work then it would be better that it didnt exist at all. If this work is going to continue for a substantial length of time then something needs to be put on the front of the site, like 'we appologise for the inconvenience, though due to current improvements to the server, users may experience a lack of functionality within this site. These improvements will be completed by (insert date here) and we hope that users will remain patient during this period' sign it from someone important and voila! instant brownie points and gold stars all round. I could say it would be better not to upload the changes to the server until all the work has been done, though we are obviously too late for that one.

whoredom....would you like a guided tour of all the skinning sites that either no longer exist or are in their x'th reincarnation in an attempt to stay viable? In contrast, Wincustomize.com has had a total downtime of about 2 or 3 days or so in its entire lifetime....and on those occasions was generally due to increasing server capacity and improving accessibility.

Improving a site and its accessibility while maintaining it on-line [for paying members - those who help finance the upgrading for everyone], and only minimal disruption to those who have not contributed can hardly be construed as poor professional practise.

Perhaps a clearer understanding of the complexity/issues of maintaining an online presence is warranted before making critical comment...

well if YOU are happy with the state of the work you are paying for then i guess that is ok. As far as i can see, the 'complex' problem is changing anything that refers to 'stardock.com' to 'wincustomize.com'... now call me frugal, call me tight, but if i was paying someone by the hour i would expect this work to be done within a couple of hours and not DAYS! Someone is making a mint by dragging their heels. maybe if information was posted on the front of the site then many of these people would not feel the need to post on the message board or search for an explanation from weeks ago.

whoredom, there was a problem, and it's been fixed pretty quickly. But to fix it, Stardock had to change a subdomain from one server to another. That was done pretty quickly. But now the wait is due to DNS propagation. It can take a few days, or in some cases even a week before all the ISP's on the planet make the change on their own server. Out of our, or Stardock's control.

Really? I haven't noticed anything broken. I paid for my subscription to wincustomize and I'm not complaining because I know how hard it is to transfer settings and information from one server to another.

Patience my friend!
