What's you longest PC uptime?

Sunday, September 21, 2003 by El Californio | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Microsoft OS PC only. Mine's about three days.

And did you need to reboot or did you just shutdown?

8 hours using Windows XP Home. I turn my PC off when I am not using it so the 8 hour period was just how long I was using it. At times XP has slowed down to a crawl where I am forced to reboot. I have never had that happen with Linux. I have never had a crash with Linux ever since I learned how to properly configure it.

I've never had a crash either Tech Cat, not one BSOD, since I started using W2k, and now XP. I've had some lock ups, but all caused by myself or beta software. I enjoy beta testing, and stuff happens, especially when I push my luck...

I can't located the article at the moment, but I read just a couple of days ago, the folks that write WinXPnews, have machines running XP, that haven't been rebooted for months. (6 or 9... I can't remember which)

No, I don't get BSOD with Windows XP, but I have had my system slow down to such a crawl that the only thing I can do is reboot using the power button. It's just as annoying as any BSOD.

Forgot to mention I use XP Home Edition. I never had XP crash. The only XP crashes I've had are from certain apps and when I configure something incorrectly. Mandrake Linux never crashed on me but when I did an update online I couldn't boot back onto Linux and it pissed me off so I went back to XP a few days ago.

No way are you serious??

Leo LaPorte from "The Screensavers" on TechTV said anything over 256MB of RAM is overkill and even for the power gamer or power user. He said it's a waste of money.

BSOD is something that happens in Windows XP. Though it generally revolves around drivers and something causing a failure to read the NTFS or some key file upon booting.

I have 512MB of RAM and at present I'm using 283MB....... so much for his theory..

Leo LaPortly is a boob. If you're running XP with only 256MB RAM, you're out of memory and swapping before you've even fininshed booting all the way up. RAM is so cheap, it just doesn't make since not to have at least 512. My cleanest XP box has about 290MB used just sitting there. Also, anyone that's got any Windows system that's been up for more than several weeks isn't patching. Every windows patch in recent memory has required a reboot. For instance...the latest RPCSS service patch (big deal) was released only 11 days ago.

As far as uptime, With windows the best I have to offer right now is 11 days for my windows servers at work.

I ran a Win98SE machine 24 days without rebooting as a file/web server once. A whopping 200mhz and 64 megs of ram. I had forgotten to reboot for 2 weeks countless times before i switched to a supposedly 'more stable' OS. Doesn't crash any less now, but then it never really crashed under 98SE, even with the apache, php, and mysql win32 binaries, and continually serving up mp3's for my mobile machines without missing a beat. The only time it locked was when my PHP scripts were poorly written.

P.S. anyone who tells you that over 256 megs of ram is a waste doesn't use their computer. I have a gig on a dual channel board and I have used every last drop many times. IF all you use is a web browser, word processor and email, then sure, 128 will probably do. And you won't need more than a p90 either. Mr LaPortly should reconsider the performance hit when one uses their hard drive for ram.

Anything over 256 mb a waste

I would be looking at a blank screen right now if that were true

So that we can stay on topic and give peace of mind to those thinking of upgrading (or just bought) memory.

256 MB is absolute minimum for XP. Your swap file on your hard drive will take a real beating thus degrading performance that you other wise would have

512 MB is adequate under performance demands, but will still churn your hard drive. Most XP machines running 40,50 or more processes will easily eat up 300 to 400 MBs at idle

1GB or more. If you have 512 already and have a dual channel mobo your only upgrade option is 1GB or more. At this point in development 1GB is the optimum size and the cost is comparatively small in regards to other components.

There is no such thing as memory overkill...anymore then a 2MB on-die processor cache is overkill. So for all who think they may have wasted money on memory....take heart...you did good!
