What's you longest PC uptime?

Sunday, September 21, 2003 by El Californio | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Microsoft OS PC only. Mine's about three days.

And did you need to reboot or did you just shutdown?

#19 by yrag - 9/21/2003 4:23:51 PM So that we can stay on topic and give peace of mind to those thinking of upgrading (or just bought) memory. 256 MB is absolute minimum for XP. Your swap file on your hard drive will take a real beating thus degrading performance that you other wise would have

I thought Microsoft recomends 128 MB absolute minimum?

Maybe Leo LaPorte said 512MB.

Oh well I just got 384MB.

Sure it will install...but it'll run like cr@p. I guess I took it for granted that most people know that the "recommended requirements" are actually the real-world minimum in order to use the product remotely like it was intended for.

8 by Citizen eminem_iz_tight - 9/21/2003 1:13:32 PM im running win xp home and its been up for 316 days 23 hours 45 minutes 38 secs dont need to reboot or turn off since i dont install that much software for me to do a reboot i play mostly games on my pc so i dont need to reboot my specs are 1 gb ram 400 gb hdd 2/200 gb hdds combo dvd/cdr/w burner/player and a nvidia gforce2 mx with s video out No way are you serious??Leo LaPorte from "The Screensavers" on TechTV said anything over 256MB of RAM is overkill and even for the power gamer or power user. He said it's a waste of money.

He's an idiot then. I have 1 gig in my main box, currently using 331m. I have 768 megs in my HA server (running XP pro, constanly use anywhere between 256-512 of that, CPU stays pegged at around 60-90% on that one as well. Only time I ever reboot is if I load an update to my automation software. Probably the longest time that one has been up is around 45 days. Never crashes (knock on wood).

17 days 20 hours....would be double that except I popped a safety switch [ELCB] trying to electrocute myself......running a gig of ram....256 on XP is 'bearable' but not enjoyable...

Did you add some zeroes there?? 400 gb drive and 2 200 gigs?? You're a gamer and got an MX card? You should of stayed with 512 ram and used the other money towards the FX line or an ATI card.

Anyway, my mouse loves to hang up on my new pc I built (AMD 2200+ w/XP Pro) so I shut down and make restore points regularly.

I ran 128MB of RAM on my WinXP HE PC w/1.3GHZ P4 with no problems for around two years before I added 256MB more. Did boost it up though.

Laptop best uptime: 1 week, usually due to problems with desktopx and hiberate. 1 gb ram, more is better! Win xp

Computer: 3 months or so. Win xp. If 1 GB ram is a 'overkill' I don't want what people call 1.5 GB ram. nearly 100% of reboots is related to windows updates, installs or turn off due to storm/power saving in trip.

Old best uptimes: win 98 4 months, win 95: 2 months ( I know, it's amazing 95 ran that long )

I think he wrote it out wrong.

he has 2 200 gig hard drives TOTALLING 400 Gigs...

so he only has 2 hard drives

Thats the way I understood it anyway.

No amount of RAM is overkill for WinXP because of something called bloatware.

Windows 2K server: 9.5 months 24/7, shutdown to replaced failed CPU Fan, ran another 6 months before backup application required reboot, still running now after 3 more months 24/7 with ~ 25 users.

Windows 2K workstation: installed in telematic prototype application (OBDII monitor, GPS navigation & mp3 player) with 65K miles on system, hibernating between driving sessions, regularly runs for 2 to 3 months without lock up. Lock ups allways due to overheating problems in summer as main processor was initialy placed too close over catalytic converter in console.

Outside of the virus/worm authors themselves...this is why there is such a problem...so-called admins/owners not doing their job (patching). There is just no excuse for this.
