Hello!

Tuesday, July 29, 2003 by adni18 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

WinCustomize is a great school!
Even if the majority of members here are not children any more( they still have a lot to learn!
I have learn a lot of things for 2 years now, thanks to you, thanks to positive or negative comments to authors and of course, thanks to messageboard arguments, they were all very useful, for one who likes to learn!
I must say there is a quallity in WinCustomize MessageBoard, you can't find very easy in a public MB.
There are some exceptions though, from some persons, but that's life, in any activity of life there are always some bad exceptions.

You may ask why I am writing all this now, because I have spend too many hours to read some long threads in the messageboard those last couple days, (you know the language problem for the foreigners) and I want to share my thoughts about what I have read with you.

Some really nice people, both sides, they have lost control when they have try to express their thoughts, both ways.
No harm is made, both sides they have understand well what is going on and they have turn down their tones.
I hope and I wish the tones remain like this.

Why all this happening, this is the important question!
I can tell you my opinion, it is the only thing I have to offer you about this problem.

Reason 1:
In the messageboard, there are some people who like to make fun to others, no matter if their fun hurts the others or they want to be accepted as clever or perfect ones. This gives a wrong and bad impression to many people who may think that this is WC.
(By the way, we must not forget that this is an Intenational site and not all are knowing the English language well, so this may be another reason of missunderstanding and wrong conclusions).

Solution to Reason 1:
The admins who are in general nice persons, (nobody wants to have an admin in his site who sending away the people), when the see a post that it is not well-meaning or it looks like an offence to another person, they must interact with good words and try to make them understand that this is not an acceptable post for a quality MB, even if they find it that it is correct or fun for them, but offensive for another person.
In that way those x persons they will learn to behave them selves and be nice for everyone and the offended ones will feel that at least they are among friendly people and mates.
We are a community, we must help each other.

Reason 2:
Some persons, are giving bad rattings not only for the quallity of a work, but also for who the artist is and this is some times not fair at all, this is for the bad and the good rates too, so the artists, who are always very sensitive, (how can any one be an artist
without sensitivity?), are geting hurt in a certain away.

Solution to the Reason 2:
The ratting system is very good for the admins and their friends, they are happy to see their high rates, so they find no reason to change it. I don't mean here that they don't deserve high rattings because they do, but this is not the point.
The point is, that very few are giving rates and the ratting system rules in WC, this doesn't happen in any other site, there are rates, but not so crucial as here. Some works disappear because of one bad rate which has been given for personal or taste reasons!
The solution is obvious.

Reason 3:
The moderation of wallpapers. I know and you know very well all the story, no need to repeat it here.

Solution to the Reason 3:
Make a new section for the wallpapers, a second one and put there all the wallpapers and let people deside which of them are going to be in the main Wallpaper section. A certain number of downloads will make a wallpaper jumb to the main Wallpapers section, please no rattings. If people like something let them have it!
A decent name for this second walls section must not have in any way an offensive name.
A slogan like:
"We are not moderating your wallpapers, we let you
decide
" is very friendly and no one can complain and give a headache to moderators.

This site is for the people and from the people!

(I know that Stardock pays for the site )

Wow! Did I wrote so many in English?
Yes I did, because I care!

Please, don't shoot the piano man!

i thought we got away from this and had a general understanding... i guess not. Ratings arent going away no matter what u do they have multiple purposes here on the site.
one is quality control, y show low rated stuff to the general public (ie the other 700,000 people who come by here) Its a majority system based on averages, with one flaw and that is irresponsible raters, which i have already stated. It saves on banwidth, and it saves our image tot he other 700,000 people who arent signed up, if u want to see everything else just set ur settings to see everything 1 and up.

Also ur michael jackson example, this sint about persoanl choice, u dont like it leave. Or find a way to adapt, u know change, get along. if u dont liek it and it has a high rating doesnt mean have to dl it, its just a majority of people who did rate it found it was a good professionally made skin.

*jafo would have had a fit if i wouldnt have changed it abit *

Trying to decipher instant messenger psycho babble is difficult, it would appear as if the simple passage I left was taken wrong or misinterpreted by you, my statements were completely rhetorical and for general consumption nothing more.

Has anyone ever been to DigitalArt.org? I've submitted some fractals there and when they happen to pass moderation, they are posted with no rating what so ever. It's only after moderation that the image/ art can be rated by the members. The only time you feel that the moderators are moderating is when an image is marked "Standout" which means in the eyes of the moderators that the piece of work is very good or obviously when it doesn't make it.

If possible would a combination of moderating and then ratings by members be done? The indicator of a good piece of work is the downloads.......it separates the newbie from the seasoned skinner because the higher the download the more likely the product was well liked . At the same time I think that members rating history be viewable to prevent people from maliciously rating people for the hell of it and think they can get away with it.

I think that since WC is the pinnacle of wallpapers/skinning websites......that adds to the competition of having the best stuff at the best website, and that can and has had a negative effect onthe community.

GA, everything you've said is done here, except the moderators don't say outstanding, they give the first rating. As a member of this community, they can rate after it goes up anyway and if you look at some of the comments, some do come from the moderators after it goes up. The rating history is checked on people and if they abuse it, it's taken away from them. So if you think about what you said, there's basicly no difference between the sites.

Hmmm, that's true. I think the first rating out the gate is what bothers people "if" they take it that way.

Just a thought-Yes frogboy those costs are astronomical and pretty hard to work around-so how about a compromise of sorts? Someone said awhile back that if something got rated a 1 then they would need several 9"s to offset-how about a system where you don"t count the highs or the lows but everything in the middle, that way you could keep the current system basically intact but offset the folks that either rate low or high for unneccasary reasons. Just a thought ,what do you think?

Yeah...........I'm just gonna steer away from heavy topics as I tend to bark louder then I should. In all honesty I regret what transpired as I added as much fuel to the fire as anyone. I spoke with FrogBoy and we pretty much came to an understanding and hopefull I can redeem some of the dignity and respect that I have left here.

Considering What SHC said about raising the bar on ratings(going to Master Apprentice and up)...

If I am not mistaken Apprentice and up is about 1000+ people on the site right?

Just being curious...Does anyone know how many people are Master Apprentice and up?...500 or so?

What about making the current "moderators" admins and selecting a larger group of people to be moderators. These people would preferably be skinners and would have no additional responsibility/authority than normal with the exception of rating and providing feedback to uploaders. If this was done it would be necessary to stress the importance of providing instruction and feedback to uploaders along with rating their work. Make sure they understand the commitment they are making and if they're not able to keep up, then replace them with someone else. More ideal, but probably a bit too much work, would be to have seperate moderators who are skilled in a particular area that are assigned to each section, WB, Wallpapers, etc.

I think this idea would foster more a genuine community vibe here.

Then again, the same could be achieved by having Journeymen do the rating. However, there might be a few too many of those and accountability could be an issue.

That's actually a good idea....it could even be on a rotating basis so that current moderators are fresh and the old one's can take a breather.
