Wallpaper Moderators?
Friday, May 9, 2003 by Zodiaq~ | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
I should probably just keep my mouth shut but I just can't any longer, now please don't anyone get defensive and pounce on me but all one has to do is look at the first few pages of submissions to realize that the quality of walls(with the exception of a few) is seriously going down hill. How is some of this stuff getting through moderation?
I don't claim to be an artist or anything, in fact I am pure amateur, but some of those...mmmm....I just don't get it.
I think there are many of you that would agree with me on this, the number of downloads on some of them speak loud and clear as to what most wincustomizer's are thinking.
Please don't be angry at me guys, this is just an observation over the last week or so, which has made me think there is new blood moderating the walls.

For god sake where is the sign saying you must download every Wallpaper
Exactly there isn't one, and what you think is rubbish is another persons treasure.
Yes i would love to join the moderating but those who do it have a good knowledge of these things.
The ones you don't like leave a comment on them then complain after nothing changes cause at the moment your trying to grab thin air and lets face it....its getting you nowhere.
Its a shame great artists are leaving (Green Armani to name but one)but its alot easier to please when bad points are made to improve on than just being told your work sucks.

The wallpaper section for me always should have been about a place to upload a wall that goes with a specific skin. Not as a free for all. There are plenty of other sites which serve that purpose.
The advantages of not having the same wallpaper section would be:
1. Less bandwidth would be used. Generally walls are bigger than skins.
2. Less time spent critiquing walls and more time approving skins. Skins submitted get approved faster.
3. No reason for people to bicker on the messageboard about the moderators judgements on a wallpaper. Don't worry, people would find something else to bicker about anyway.
4. More enjoyment for those reading the messageboard.
The disadvantages:
1. Some artists may well leave because of it which would be a real shame.
2. Some artists who produce skins and walls may well leave which would be more of a shame.
(Yes I class those who produce skins as more important to me. I don't use walls unless they are exceptional and only then just so I can admire the image). I do use skins and as they are what will eventually make Stardock money that is a benefit to me as a subscriber. I want to see Stardock able to produce the things I dream about.
3. People will have to find something else to bicker about.

Not all of us bicker as you put it so why crucify us all for it?
those with a problem should deal with it themself rather than slander us for not being as talented as skinners. End of story.

I believe it should remain to help complement the great skins being made.
I am unable to comprehend all the fuss that is being made over it, except that there seems to be a few who "thrive" on nothing more than praise and numbers, and if they have their way, will ruin it for the rest of us.
I get a lot of enjoyment looking at the wallpapers, using the ones I like, bringing them into my home because I can see the real people behind them by the art they make. I like to watch an artist develop such as has DarkMist. I remember his first and how he tried so hard until he found a way through the creation process giving us some real nice stuff to enjoy, while the process continues.
Too much emphisis is being placed on "Top Download" and "Top Authors'. If this is the only way some people have of measuring their own or anothers worth, then maybe they need to find someplace else to go, because I believe Wincustomize is built upon the worth of people behind the art.
It is not the art, but the artist that makes this site valuable, deny the artist whether a skinner or a wallpaper maker a place for expression, and WC will deny itself a place.

I didn't get a chance to download his walls!!
(hey, that is the first time I used that emoticon in a while)
I do critical words on skins and wall and screenshots, and other stuff. I try to be constructive with it and not put the person down.
I also try to explain why I like something too; but most of the time I just say well done or Good Work (or Great Work).
I think the problem is:
a0
not knowing when to change the mood of the conversation on the board and knowing when to stop or take it to email or IM
Not knowing how to be critical of something. it is a technique to it.
Also there is a pointing fingers of blame as to the downward fall of the board, but many can be blamed for that (even me
) and its not just the visitors or the admin.. a little more of both. Also keep in mind that things go in cycles. There will be days where stuff gets through, there will be days where it doesn't. The message board also will go through cycles.
The real question is, are you going to help and change, or leave and let something you like self destruct?
If there is help needed as moderators, or you think they need help, then try to do so and contact them.
If there is a need to open an issue and discuss it, open it in a way that will hopefully spark ideas and constructive opinions. If someone post something 'wierdo' then try to help by streering the convo back to its origins.
The first place to change the enviornment is to change yourself.

All you can do is wait, they know when they need it

Anyway, for some reference to what admins go through as to why they sometimes come off grumpy:

If its still up.

As for moderation of walls this has been discussed over and over and perhaps those who are concerned should be given a stint as a "guest moderator" for a month. Not to have a deciding vote but to provide input to the other mods. But the guest will have to see every submission and comment on it and recommend OK or not OK and why so the mods know they actually reviewed the walls. It would be an interesting experiment. I suspect by the end of the month the guest might not want to look at another wall for a long time.

Of course that is just my opinion and I'm not expecting anyone else to agree with it.

i am more concerned about getting something ok'ed. i've uploaded about 20 walls, which none were excepted, thats all well and good, i get frustrated cuz i dont know y, i'd like 2 have a chance 2 c what other ppl think of my work, good or bad, that way i could improve my work without having 2 guess whats wrong. i know i'm no gr8 artist, but i feel some of my stuff is as good as what has been excepted. i'm a bryce user, and alot of ppl here on wc talk of bryce as if it were a dirty word.
i agree with armani and zodiaq and what they had 2 say.
1 last thought, this is a skin site, so y is there such a gr8 concern about the walls, 2 me the concern should b on the quality of the skins.
1 more thought, i'm in no way mad at any1 or criticising any1, i write the post mostly out of frustration. i would not like 2 b in the admin's or mod's shoes, i just hope they can figure out something equitable 4 every1.
best of luck 2 every1!!

From my stand point I don't think I'm whining.....
It sounds like, for some reason, you thought I was talking directly to you. It was a general comment due to the fact that there has been a plethera of wallpaper moderation threads during the last month all complaining about something different. |
Reply #55 Saturday, May 10, 2003 5:44 PM
Denny03...you've had a quite high proportion of your submissions accepted....I know, because I accepted many of them...
Green Armani, likewise...some of which I pushed through immediately on upload simply because I can recognize good work when I see it.
Other works get comments like 'I don't know' or 'haven't we already got too many just like it', and languish waiting for a consensus one way or another.
I would HOPE that there is more to anyone's leaving than what is contained in this thread...but people are free to come and go as the whim takes them. However if there IS another [darker] reason it'd be clever to contact an Admin and discuss it....

This is the last thing I wanted to happen. It seems you can't post anything on this board if it's not agreeable to everyone without it turning into a fiasco.
Will a moderator please close this thread it's a waste of time and energy.
I'm gonna go finish a skin I've been working on so I can upload for all of ya
