Request for comments from skin authors

Tuesday, April 22, 2003 by Neil Banfield | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Now that WindowBlinds 4.0 for XP has been released and appears to be a nice solid base for us to build on, we would like some feedback from skin authors about what you would like to see added to WB 4.

We are aware of a demand for toolwindow skinning in UIS2 and MDI controls in UIS1, but would like to know what other features you would be interested in having in WB.

You can also report any bugs in how WB draws things if you wish (not crashes - post them in our newsgroups, just places where its not producing the results you expect)

If you do not wish to post in public here, then e-mail [email protected] with your suggestions / requests.

Make more use of the 'SmartButton' concept. Fix and update the currently existing plugins (eg. the QuickLaunch doesn't actually work for most items in the menu!), and add some new plugins based on user ideas.

As for PNG support, what about those people who don't use SkinStudio, and those of us who use Fireworks which uses PNG as its native file format. It would be tremendously helpful to be able to edit my images directly and see the results without having to re-optimize and export as a BMP or TGA every time.

Smart Button I'd like to see: a Volume Control.
Maybe just a popup slider with a checkbox for Mute.

Two things I have found today, because I am working on a dark skin. 1. the taskbar groupmenu has a section that let's you change the color of the text, but it doesn't work, the text will always be the color of the buttontext in the colors section. 2. in the xp start panel, the default text color works but the mouseover/focus color won't work. Those would be nice things to fix I know soneone said so earlier but if we could change the logoff/shutdown text color, that would be super.

I have a suggestion: Be able to skin the shell panel in the Win XP Search Window. You gotta do something with that dog!

I too would love png support. I have never been comfortable with Skin Studio and to use it to convert pngs to tga is just plain clumsy and awkward.

Stardock already have an application to skin the logon screen thundr51. It's called LogonStudio and can be found here: https://www.stardock.com/products/logonstudio/

Some would argue that as the logon screen isn't technically a part of the Windows desktop, it's not something that WindowBlinds should have to deal with.

Is it possible to make a tutorial for plug ins?

I would like to have a windowblind tell if I am on-line by changing color or animate.

Another one would turn on 'lights' that at a certain time of the day, the 'lights' would come on.

If windowblinds can't do that yet, then I think that would be a nice addition.

Thank You.
