Hi, is a interface really the reason for a worse OS, surely not,

but one of windows good points was the default design till windows 7. Hope windows 11 will have a better design or there will be great icon packs for free.

The buying public is fickle and a hard bunch to persuade, so if a handful say Win 10 is 'crap' because of this, that or whatever, people will stay away from it in droves.  It doesn't have to be bad, a handful of so-called experts is all that's needed to condemn an OS to failure.  Vista wasn't that bad, nor was Win 8, but both failed in the marketplace because various media personalities put the mocker on them.... and from there a few million people knew of dozens of others who thought they were crap. 

So yeah, Win 10 could equal Vista and Win 8 in the fail stakes. It won't matter that Win 10 is superior under the hood to all OSes before it, if so n' so from such and such magazine says it's crap, then Win 10 will fail, cos basically, people are sheep and quite easily led... gullible is another term.

It shouldn't be, especially when improvements under the hood warrant its uptake, but for the abovementioned reasons, people will reject Win 10 if vthe media crucify it.  Frankly, I am appalled at the icons being touted as the system set, but I believe in what the OS will have to offer outside of the GUI and will upgrade to it without hesitation... I do. after all, have IP to change that which is offensive to the eye.

Yeah, I get your point, and to most rational thinking people it makes sense, but we're talking about a buying public with little or no mind of their own and will believe somebody who new somebody whose sister went out with a bloke who knew somebody who tried Windows 10 and didn't like it... and from there it snowballs until the gerneral populace has an aversion to it.  And guess what, that Windows 8/8.1 that everybody hated [before], well that'll become the next best thing since sliced bread and Win 7. 

Yup, they'll all be goving Win 10 a miss and waiting for 11... until Win 12 looks more inviting because 11 has this something or other wrong with it..  The truth is, the buying public is never satisfied with whats on offer,  No, the next edition is newer, so it has to be better... until it arrives and the next one is one the drawing board for a future release... and so on... and so on.  Put bluntly, OS developers can't win... the media and consumer is there to ensure that.

And then you get a company like MS giving them good reason to reject the OS by coming up with atrocious and childlike icons that offend even average users, let alone those who are discerning.

What it was was 'first impressions' something all-important in the commercial world.

If MS gets it 'wrong' with the GUI [the bit you actually see] then it is a FAIR ASSUMPTION [logical progression] that they also got it wrong with the rest of it [the kernel].

User [GUI] experience is far more important [commercially] than people here obviously think. [note the runaway success of Start8]

It's all well-and-good that 'power users' can get all starry-eyed about what has changed 'under the hood' [in 8, 8.1 OR 10] but Joe Public will simply look at it/them and say "Shit!"

It's true what you say!.   If joe user doesn't like the GUI then he's going to give the OS a miss... first impressions and all that, but that doesn't necessarily make it a bad one.... or that the kernel is feched.  True, MS botched Win 8's UI, but the addition of Start8 and the 8.1 update make it a solid and very reliable OS that more than rivals 7.  The same is likely of Win 10.  Under the hood it is fast, efficient and reliable, but it could well be another flop due to the childish looking icons/UI.

However, it is true that the buying public often has no mind of its own. and will reject an OS based on hearsay.  I lost count of how many people I heard rejecting Vista on the basis of hearing it was 'crap' from this or that source... and in most cases they hadn't even seen it, much less gave it a go.  Same with Win 8, there were people queuing up to call it crap without a shred of personal experience.  It's true each could have done with some refinement prior to release, but neither was a bad OS... and nothing like the calamity that was ME.

from what I remember about MY comments on vsta was looks nice, BUT almost every action  causes a S S S S L L L L O O O O W W W W     G G G  G R R R R A A A A Y Y Y Y   of the screen then the UAC box and question is drawn S S S L L L O O O W W W L L L Y Y Y  then click on the ok then back to do then NEXT action and repeat, and for the first six months a lack of drivers for various hardware, and my com,ments for windo HATE was horrible user interface that seems to be designed to PREVENT work, but had some nice tricks in the background, and on win7 vista FIXED or what VISTA should have been.

so far in winX better than HATE but still BUTT UGGGGGGGGGLLLLLLLLLY ans almost entirely designed to REPEL the user due to the FLAT monochrome icons(reminds me of windows 3)(this might be because it was intended to use on ultra low powered  tablets and phones, but on even a 8 year old laptop makes windows 95 look good(appearance wise).

After playing around with windows 10 preview i am quite liking the new look

agree however the cortana /search bar is quite annoying and i cant seem to use the old keyboard shortcut winkey+q to open search might be a a problem with VB though.
Also it is not only the icons that have changed they also changed some taskbar elements such as notification sound and so on. 

Someone tell me this is a joke!

You'd hope that somebody over at MS is reading forum posts like this across the net and taking note of the general consensus, but alas, it appears not.

If only... you'd have a better chance of getting him to go back to the drawing board.

However, it is somewhat debatable if a dyslexic 10 year old with Tourette's; St Vitus Dance; tennis elbow in both arms; knock-knees and the screaming abdabs could produce such a mish-mash of complete tripe.

Put it this way, if a kid of mine produced something half as awful I'd keep him home from school to save the embarrassment and bullying.... the shame and scandal to the family.

I can remember the same conversations of disbelief at the launch of Windows 95, 98, Windows XP, Vista, 7 etc I won't talk about ME or 8 because they are justified

Personally I am hoping windows 10 will be a good one. Why? I want a 4k monitor and I don't like the scaling options in Windows 7 so I am hoping they will have a snazzy solution for windows 10.

For the record 98, NT, XP and 7 were the best OSs - yes I used NT for playing games - Dual 300Mhz CPUs overclocked to 450Mhz vroom vroom

After seeing icons like that they may very well demand payment to take him.

There's always a hate group whenever a new OS is released... regardless of of how good or bad it is/was.  As for Win 8, yes, the GUI leaves a lot to be desired, but that's why God invented Stardock.  G'day Brad.  However, beneath the butt ugly UI, there beats the heart of a rock solid OS that's superior to all that came before it.

The same will be true of Win 10, it will surpass all OSes before it in terms of performance, stability and ability... under the hood.  As always, though, MS has found a way to fech up the GUI and make it as butt ugly to most users. 

Oh well, I have ObjectDesktop and it won't matter to me.
