Aw, leave the flat-Earthers alone.  They're harmless enough... until they push people off the edge to prove the theory.

Not that I've put much stock in this flat Earth thing, but sometimes I have wondered where people go after they've been pushed.

Anyway, I was finally going to get around to installing the Win 10 preview earlier this evening.  Wanted to see first-hand what all the fuss is about, but not all went according to plan.  Now I DID download the ISO, and I DID put it in a Microsoft folder on a 'programs' partition on an external drive, but when I went to find it, there it was gone.  An Everything search didn't find it, and I even tried the other drives to ensure I'd not put it on another, but alas, no such luck, it just seems to have mysteriously disappeared into chasm of no return.

It means having to download it again, and the internet here is as slow as a wet week, so it's going to take 'til Sunday arvo [Oz time around the Winter Solstice] to get my hands on it... again.  Nah, it's not quite that bad, but it could take 'til sometine Saturday morning [Oz time] before the download completes. Could be worse,  I suppose, could be waiting on the 'real' snail mail for it to arrive.

Being as my plans for the evening got feched up  by this catsasstrophy, I decided insted to pick the lint outta my belly button... didn't have any. Orright, I'd clean the wax out of my ears... didn't have any.  Okay, I'm bound to have some toe jam to remove... nope, didn'y have any.  Next thing was watch a porno and... well I didn't have any. What to do, what to do?

Oh, that's right!  When all else fails, I still have you lot here at WC to pester.

So, the question remains, do I get these butt ugly icons now cos I'm downoading a later build, or can I wait 'til next payday to get some 'sick bags' [like those you find in the back of the seat in front of you on most commercial flights]?

The other question that comes to mind: does anybody know yet if Fisher Price is gonna sue for unauthorised use of IP?  And if not, does anybody know of a kindly lawyer [if there is such a thing] to represent us pro bono in a class action to have these abominable eyesores removed from Win 10 prior to official release?

Another thing before I go, MS has hired a comedian... to write some Win 10 blogs.  Can't recall the exact wording, but it went something like this: "This will be the best ever verion of Windows thanks to you.  You have told us what you want and we have listened...."

Yeah, right!  we/re still getting these fugly icons.

Let's hope IconPackager comes away from it's only up to Windows XP compatibility until then. *ducks*

Seriously. last time IconPackager was able to change all my Icons consistently WAS on XP. And You were able to build packages without pulling out Your hair back then.

It's a preview version, not anywhere near finished. I'm sure that the final version will be consistent, and hopefully consistently good....

Yes, the icons are dismal, but I'm all over it for free.  I paid $35.00 for XP on my old core 2 quad and upgraded to 8 for $40.00, then got the free 8.1 upgrade.  I'll take the free W10 upgrade with a smile, especially since it'll be replacing the least liked OS in the house.   

I'll be keeping my W7 machines at that level until W10 proves itself though.  No point in fixing what ain't broke.

Well the Win 10 preview dowload didn't take as long as first estimated - like 30 something hours - it was finished when I woke up this morning... late this morning, that is.  Didn't get to sleep 'til gone 4.00am, so it was gone 10 when I awoke.  Anyway, it's on a thumb drive ready to be installed... which I will..er, CAN do this evening after dinner.

Then I shall see what all the fuss is about... YIPEEEEEE!!!!!

Still no luck with the Win 10 preview.  Can't get it to dual boot with Win 8.1  Tried a couple of BCD editors but no go.  I'm either missing something or I'm not doing it right... or both.  I any event, at 4.28am, I've spent waaaay too much time on it and now it's way past my bedtime.

Grrrrrrrr..... and fech, fech and fech once more.

One of my 'earliest' forays into skinning was making icons for Gorin Desktop...a GUI for Dos.

It had a very limited [and odd] colour palette of 16 [no, not bit - hues].

It took a lot of effort to make something with a max of 16 colours and a grand total of 64 pixels even look halfway like anything at all ....but I bet mine were better than Win 10's ....

This is the bizarre thing though. It is 2015 and they're giving the world icons as if it was last century with limited technology. They're going back the way.

I see what you mean... followed the link and thought....who in their right mind would pay for such rubbish?  Certainly not I.

To say that the direction icons have been going recently is somewhat disappointing is a complete understatement, to say the least.

Yes, by all means make an OS as efficient as it can be for those who want ultimate speed and performance, but don't sacrifice appearance to achieve it and bring back Aero.  It may have used some resources, but it needn't be activated by default, just make it an option for those who DO want it.to escape this crazy 'flat phase' the movers and shakers of PC world seem to be going through.

It's a bit like condoms, really... one size does NOT fit all... nor do 'flat' GUIs appeal to everyone.  So okay, Microsoft, leave the prettying up of OSes to companies like Stardock, but at least give them an acceptable appearance for those who do not customise their desktops.   Oh, and thank goodness for Stardock providing us the tools to vastly improve upon that which is sup-par in Windows, aesthetically speaking, that is.  I love Win 8.1 in its customised state, it is fast, efficient and stable, but the default GUI is crap,

So there you have it, Microsoft... and please learn from this thread/your mistakes.

So it might be, but the Vista/Aero 'look' is considerably more pleasing than this flat crap they're trying to peddle now.

Newer isn't necessarily better, and this icon debacle is proof of that... nor will it win over those who've been sitting on the 'Windows fence' since Win 8 hit the shelves.

Seriously, those icons are positively childish and MS ought to be ashamed it didn't come up with better.  I mean, they expect Win 10 to go into millions of homes and businesses worldwide, but if that's the best they can do then millions of discerning users who don't customise ARE going to seek alternative PC/computing solutions.

To put it in 'cinema' terms, Apple [and possibly Linux] would be rolling in the aisles at this turn of comedic events.

Yup, this is the one time in the history of Apple that it DID'NT 'invent' something.... not even Apple would want to lay claim to this unsightly mess.

I see what you mean... again.  Apple's icons are almost as bad as those intended for Win 10.  I say 'almost. because they're not 'quite' as butt ugly, but the flat trend is bloody awful and OS developers need to be told it's unacceptable.  Yes, I've heard the theory that dumbing down an OS makes it more usable to a wider group of people, but this is going too far.  MS and Apple are treating users like children with these simplified icons, and for mine that's damned rude, to say the least.

Yes, I can use IconPackager to avoid being treated like a child, but that's not the point.  MS SHOULD be releasing an OS with icons that are much better to begin with.  In fact, since Win 7 and the abandonment of Aero, the trend towards 'flat', the Windows GUI has been abysmal and HAS to be customised in order to make the OS usable.  Under the hood, Win 8.1 is a great OS, but it was a major marketing fail because people did not like the UI, and though Win 10 has even more improvements under the hood, MS obviously has learned nothing about appearance, that it too is important to users who spend time at their PCs

So yes, MS, wake up before you have yet another marketing flop on your hands.

Would be worse than rejecting windows8 because of a new interface as only reason.
