Rating Trolling

Friday, July 11, 2014 by Island Dog | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I was made aware today (again) of someone rating trolling as I call it.  This is where someone is purposely giving a skin a "1" rating to bring down the ratings.  We (the moderators and admins) have been doing this long enough to know what a fair and reasonable rating is, and even giving leeway to that it's easy to see where someone is just doing to harm a skin rating.

The surprising part is this is done by people who have been here for years and are ranking members of the site.

Ratings have always been a touchy subject, but there comes a point where the actions of one member to clearly harm another members skin is something we won't tolerate.  As an example, we deleted over 30 "1" ratings made by one person on competing skins in the same category.

From here on I will demote any member regardless of their current ranking who is doing this in a clearly malicious manner.

Over rating a skin because someone is a friend is just as harmful to other skinners.

that statement is dead on also

AND Fuzzy's statements are dead on.

and this topic is dead... and ON, and ON, and ON, and ON, and ON... for YEARS now.

It's always ends with.." The rating system will stay the way it is. Deal with it." and we go ON and ON and ON and ON.

The mods bitch about drive by ratings, the users give input and are told (see above, rinse and repeat..)

So there really is no damn point in bringing it up at all now is it?

Back on topic...

You know what I really think? Skinning is a community, and as such we should all support each other and treat each other with respect.

And it's how things once were, not too long ago.

doortech1

I have often felt subject to low ratings because of things I say or because I don't have a gang at wc.I have been told to watch what I say often, and others say what they like.

And it's how things have become.

I think a lot of people (more than would admit ) have gotten caught up in the so called clicks and politics of the site, no matter how real or imaginary they may seem or are, including myself (I'm ashamed to say). It's one of the things that diminished my input and participation and now it;s just my excuse for lurking in the background.

That said, if I may quote someone (and not to be cute or funny) But as a Mr. Costanza once said " I gotta a lot of problems with you people!" I'm sure it goes both ways as well.

There are people here who get a bad rap (some a hell of a lot worse than others) for crap that has absolutely NOTHING to with skinning, the site, or the price of tea in China and they take a lot of shit for it openly AND behind the scenes...but MOSTLY behind the scenes. It's the insecure cowards and idiots who would just feed and keep that pile of burning garbage and tires going by throwing more fuel on it that encourage and do things like drive-by ratings and the like. And it's a goddamn shame.

It's amazing how easy and quickly we can judge a person on anything we want AND have a LOT to say about it in PM's, emails, messenger, and all to anyone who will listen...but don't have the fucking nerve to post a simple comment on the skin that person has made. Just click that one star and run away.

Some of the folks that are getting beat up are people that would (AND have) given the shirts off their backs to other members here and probably would for the ones bashing them behind the scenes or behind their backs because that is just the tyoe of people they are and they don't know how to be any other way...despite what some people would try and have other people believe.

I've been on both sides of it. It's funny, when you have actually been on both sides, how much easier it can be to be the coward or the idiot than to be the giver and the good example. It's easy to get caught up in the hen party's and bullshit. It takes a real human being to reach out and pull someone up , dust them off, and give them a little time, friendship, compassion, etc....even when you've heard all the bullshit being said in the background about them or when you have nothing to gain and something to lose.

So, IMHO, we all (and by 'all' I mean 'we/you know who we/you are') just need to get over ourselves. Life is too fucking short and real friends are too fucking scarce.

I'm thinking "skins" here may mean any of the multitude of categories that this site supports. My first thought was windowblinds and the thread seemed to go that way but it just as well could be "dreams" which seems to have multiple uploads per hour. What made me change my direction were the comments regarding helping one another. As far as windowblind skinners go, we do help each other.

What makes it harder for me to help now a days is that I'm still using the 7 versions which makes it difficult to answer 8 questions. I've asked questions regarding the differences and such but those have gone unanswered, which makes me a little skittish to make the leap. (hint-hint again)

Anyhow, for me the key is being responsible and fair with my ratings, personality doesn't have poop to do with it.

Watching 4 pages of responses...and KNOWING what [and who] prompted this thread [this time] is quite 'entertaining'.

People would be better served heeding the warnings stated within rather than attempting point-scoring...

Who mentioned over rating?

An assumption, or guilt perhaps?

Odd anyone would rate a competitor's skin low, anyhow.

Seems to me if you feel threatened by another's work, the answer isn't to rate them lower -- the answer is to make your skins/works even better.

I'm more or less in the same boat as others who can't grab up every Master skin that comes along for whatever reason so I ask if an smx or rainy or something is wanted and I've been very fortunate in that regard. I think my skills have improved over the years and I don't consider myself on the same level as most. The vast majority of skinners at WC are IMO far better artistically than I am. If I could be half as good as they are that would be awesome. To 'compete' would make no sense. to quote one of the Masters.....remember...keep skinning fun. That's what its all about, fun. I love what I do and have had excellent help and support when I needed it. My problem is this. Because the browser I use, Whitehat, doesn't allow comments on skins and Chrome is so rife with ads (even with adblocker) that it makes it difficult to use I limit my comments to the forums. Its a trade off. Anyway...I can click on the ratings and do so based on what I see in the preview. I dob't pay attention to the stars a skin already has, that's just an overall average. If a skin has four stars lit up I'll sometimes rate it and light up the fifth, giving it a ten because I like it that much. I don't consider it as over rating. I'll rate any skin based on how it looks and feels to me personally no matter who makes it. I can't play favorites, that's not how I am. To me the WC is a second home and everyone, skinner and non-skinner alike is family, a bit dysfunctional, that's normal in any family, but still family. I like family!

nah. WC needs at least one bipolar "artist", else it just wouldn't be the same. i am looking forward to his "i deserve to be a master"-phase, can't take much longer than a few months from now to occur.
