Am I wasting my time with a FAQ?

Tuesday, November 12, 2002 by Koasati | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I've been working on 3 FAQ pages. One for newbies, one for newbies that want to start skinning, and one specific to WC... why the 100meg cap, why am I getting server busy, and such. I'm still waiting for Brad to respond to an email I sent him, asking for permission for the WC FAQ. I won't post it without his approval.
Anyway, the question is, am I wasting my time? Will you guys and gals that answer the same questions over and over, send the newbies asking for help to the link? Will any of you help me out by submitting ideas for improvement, additional questions and the like? Will the newbies read it? Should I just get back to skinning something, and forget this?
Please respond, and tell me what you think.
oh yes.......... the first page as it stands right now is here http://koasati.net/faq1.htm
So ......what say ye, answerers of the redundant questions.

Abuse 'em while you can!

Also, a table of contents might be handy. List all the questions at the top and link them (via anchors, you know, the # things) to the part of the page where the question is answered. Makes it easier for people to find what they need.

Baker...preferably single zip...if it gets much over about 2meg, perhaps the larger res could be jpegs rather than bitmaps.
I personally don't see the need for a squillion separate resolutions, just the different 'proportional' ones....1024x768 and 1280x1024 covers most....and maybe 1600x1200 for the Sony 21 inchers out there....

How about having the FAQ as a new Library entry. That way it could easily uploaded or updated under the current site scheme. Searching would also be possible with the already built in search function, ordering, and categories. Seems to me it would be very easy to set up on the site this way...

What do you think T-Man....?

okie doke. I decided just to upload a 1280 version and see how it went. If I decide to update with any others I'll make 'em jpegs. thanks.

"How about having the FAQ as a new Library entry. "

We have slowly been working on an a knowledge base system (ie: https://www.stardock.com/support/support.asp). This system will eventually be used for all our products/websites. This it what I plan to incorporate into WinCustomize. Right now its pretty generic but in the future we hope to add search capabilites to it and so on. But that is the general direction that I intend to take for the WinCustomize FAQ.

Jafo -"...Yanks may be feeble minded, but we've got it all over ya.....we're a race of 'slack bastards'" The Texans would love to challenge the arrogant Aussies to a grand "slack-off". We'll impart the rules to Jafo tomorrow .. or next week .. or perhaps next year - you know how these things go.

Pat.... new mail sent..... now take me off your blacklist, so you can receive it.

Bangkokboy....... I don't know if we can handle those slackers from Oz....... I know of no Texas that has written and intensively promoted a "program" that would compare with the likes of Babya.......

BKB...do your 'challenge' thing...naturally, WE don't care what you do, we're calling in a sickie and goin' to the pub....

we're already at the bar, Jafo, and we didn't even call in. the boss beat us here. Slack are ye ? indeed!!

however ... koasati has broached the most salient point of all. if babya is any measure of the heights to which Aussie slackness can soar when properly motivated, then we may have to think about this a bit longer. not saying you win outright mate, but you've got some formidable credentials there!

Nah...we just take the cake for 'Moron Of The Year Award'...[who else could create an OS which real humans would call a bit of 'childish VB coding in Windows'?

Aafuss....MAAAAAATE...it is not an OS, it doesn't even cut it as a program, or even 'programme'....

The phrase 'waste of space' springs to mind...

The FAQ is great
Adam Najmanowicz loves it.
However, you refer to StyleXP in multiple places as "it skins" or suggest that it's a product that actually does something more than cracks uxtheme. I'd suggest you replaced all occurences of "StyleXp" with "Windows XP" or "Visual Styles" or "MSSTYLES engine" even though you say it later explicitly that it does not skin. StyleXP takes a lot of undeserved credit for wat it does not do.

Adam Najmanowicz will try to fit his particular interest into the FAQ now.

Why not a word about the tools for skins creation?

Excellant point about StyleXP...... I'll work on that.

Concerning the tools of skin creation, that will be in the guide to creating skins/themes. (coming soon, I hope)
