Am I wasting my time with a FAQ?

Tuesday, November 12, 2002 by Koasati | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

I've been working on 3 FAQ pages. One for newbies, one for newbies that want to start skinning, and one specific to WC... why the 100meg cap, why am I getting server busy, and such. I'm still waiting for Brad to respond to an email I sent him, asking for permission for the WC FAQ. I won't post it without his approval.
Anyway, the question is, am I wasting my time? Will you guys and gals that answer the same questions over and over, send the newbies asking for help to the link? Will any of you help me out by submitting ideas for improvement, additional questions and the like? Will the newbies read it? Should I just get back to skinning something, and forget this?
Please respond, and tell me what you think.
oh yes.......... the first page as it stands right now is here http://koasati.net/faq1.htm
So ......what say ye, answerers of the redundant questions.

Koasati, yes its a good idea. I have been waiting for this FAQ. I know Jobeleca was either making one on his own or trying to help you out. Not sure which.

Anyway, I've been waiting for one of you guys to post your FAQ. What I would like to do is create a FAQ page on WinCustomize and create a link on the main msgboard page that will always be on top of the list that points to the FAQ page.

I also like the idea of having the welcome page after registering also point to the page as well. So no this is now a waste of time. But I would like to have a FAQ on WinCustomize too.

I agree with JM - put a faq link on the left hand panel. Fuzzy is right as well, I think most of the people that ask some of these truly lame questions won't be bothered to check the faq.
But (and I see this as the key value and main point) with the faq we only need suggest they click the faq link and find out for themselves.

Way to go T-Man. I think the on top of the messageboard is a great idea. I hope that the FAQ can be edited or updated as needed.

The idea of the FAQ is that WHEN the next 'oh it's all so hard and I'm impatient so help me now' comes along we just 'gently' direct them to the link and politely suggest they do not repeat their request unless the FAQ has not helped.
If it 'would' but they are just being lazy/difficult, we take them out and introduce them to the in-tray at the Soylent Green factory...

Certainly not a waste of time. In fact it could be a "Newbies! Read this first!" kind of thing.
Could I also point out that item 2 about rudeness, should also apply to answers. Us thick newbies need encouragment not abuse, and some of the installation and "how to use" instructions are perhaps beyond some ppl's technical ability, esp those who use computers as tool first and foremost, but still like them to look good. Happy to say I haven't seen any overt abuse, but some comments may be misconstrued.

Koasati is amazed at the response on this!

T-Man ... Jobe had to drop out, but I've been thinking of doing this for months, so I thought I'd do it! Had I known you were interested in using it, I would have started a while back.
I'll email you, so we can things out.

LazyDawg..... good point.

Jafo.....if LD is from Texas, 'us' thick newbies, is perfectly acceptable. He spelled dawg correctly.

I think a FAQ link would be very helpful here! I'm relatively new myself, and did have some questions regarding registration...but I emailed Stardock directly for that.

One common question that might not be resolved through the FAQ page is the "What's the name of (or where can I find) this skin?" For that, we have to just rely on ppl's memories or knowledge.

Thank you for taking the time to do this...it IS greatly appreciated!

One more important point to all this is to make the link button to the FAQ the most prominent link button on the page. Perhaps bright red with bright white text at 3x5 index card. Kidding on that 3x5.
