So the computer finally is showing it's age

It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.
So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.
As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.
So carry on. Discuss I guess.

Moshi just can't get a clue.
I'm doing all I can to find work. Full time, part time, temporary. Problem is with my bad job history and bad references from previous employers topped off with this bad economy. It's hit my neck of the woods pretty hard.
Good thing we don't have a car or laundry machines. ![]()
I'm exploring all of my options, trust me.
Yes I know. However the computer handles the internet far better and my other programs I use on a day to day basis. As for modding the Xbox at this point I can't do that. Still under warranty.

If you have an AM2 socket motherboard that you could afford to post to the US, I have the corresponding CPU, then all he'd need is a stock cooler, which surely somebody in the US has a spare of laying around. I'd send one myself, but I recently posted a HDD and a stick of RAM to the US that cost me just shy of 50 bucks, and a CPU cooler would cost me similarly, so it wouldn't be cost effective for a mere ten dollar item.
I'm more than happy to send the CPU, though. If you could provide the motherboard then a large part of the problem is solved.
I will look through all that stuff tonight and make a list of what i have and post it here i will also ask my grandson if he has anything useable he could spare...

Attacking someone posting in an open forum is way out of line for someone looking for help. Telling us, Moshi just can't get a clue. People can not walk in your shoes either unless they know what shoes you wear.
It seems you have a reason for all your problems, but the reasons keep changing according to what is said here. First your disabled, then you are out of work due to employment history and job scarcity. You have nothing, yet, you have an xbox under warranty still, must be fairly new. I think if you were a little more forthcoming with some info , others may relate to the situation better, and not be so critical.
I have free stuff I could send, or maybe the paypal help, but you seem not to want to do anything to help others help you.
Teddy Bearchola offered and all you had to do is say, how about someone else use their paypal to purchase and have it shipped to you. Lots of ways , but you can not just sit back and wait like you appear to be doing and have done for years. If you truly want help, be honest, quit changing your reasons and let those who want to help form their own opinion of your needs, you can not form it for them by twisting words. You also mentioned a girlfriend, She must be a saint to support you for so long.
AS for Starkers. you just bought some space rig and windows eight, with like 50 gig of ram, obviously you are doing well, does not mean the rest of the world has what you have to offer, so wear our shoes.
So much for staying out of trouble I guess. But, if you do not push me further away Kona, and others get something started, I am on board to try to help. I am not a bastard, but not a sap either. We all live different, ain't a crime, but be upfront with people.

If you haven't done that in a couple of years and the machine is fundamentally sound, you might give that a whirl. Did wonders for my old P4. Of course it won't help the monitor or dvd but it might get you another year on the machine, a decent chunk of time in the computer world.
Edit/Clarification: I'm referring to a fresh re-install of XP. I was a little vague there.

You could add all kinds of good parts to that old rig and it ain't gonna do any better.
I'm not being mean, or trolling, or what have you.
Anything spent on that rig is wasted money/parts/etc.
It isn't worth upgrading, it needs replacing.

Actually it's a mix of all of that. I am mentally disabled. I suffer from ADD, ADHD, severe depression, sudden mood swings. And yes I have a bad job history, bad references, and jobs are scarce. The Xbox is not mine. I didn't buy it. I just use it. Does that clear that up for you? What else did you need me to clear up? I will answer what questions I can. ![]()
As soon as I win the lottery I will do just that.
Until then upgrading is the only thing I can do. Sorry.

Everyone has their own set of circumstances, I understand. I wish you luck in finding what you want/need, sorry I can't help any further.

Was quoting me for emphasis. I was afraid I may have came across as harsh earlier.
My point is, I know Kona can't afford to replace his rig. But at the same time, to spend time, effort, and money on the one he has is a wasted effort because no matter what you add to that rig, it's going to be a slow, slug of a machine, no matter what.

If Someone were to have something to share or help with.
Where would it need to be shipped?
Just a general idea so one can estimate shipping costs.

How about SASQUATCH'S! Hey Uvah, Hey Kona. I detected a little attitude in that reply, but understand you feel interogated. You did subject yourself to it.
On a positive note, Oregon, in the US, not some foreign lebanon Oregon I never heard of. ? Thats not so far. Tiger Direct probably gets there daily. I can not remember who matched what you would need, But, if they or someone would do some research online, because I have shitty dialup, I would consider purchasing a MB\CPU package if we can find a deal. I would think we could keep it pretty cheap and still get something good. Good, not smokin. I will consider suggestions and could even just do a MB or processor if some else can do one or the other. Lets start with some links or sites if you are interested. I will check back shortly.DoorTech1

Newegg.com always has the best deals. The problem is I don't know if they still stock mobos that use this DDR2 RAM. I have never used Tiger Direct. Geeks.com has a few decent deals.

Tiger Direct may very well have more of what you're looking for, give them a look.

Sorry, it was bedtime for me. Could you find a board that would take your ddr2,or ddr, which it was I forget, and would take starkers processor? Could we do this for like 50 0r 60 bucks? I May have to get a prepaid card to purchase so that wolud eat up some cash. I am a poor working man, but will be glad to help if we can do it affordably. Could we collaborate on that before looking at a board\ processor bundle. Then I could have it shipped to you, not me. Can starkers do the same with the processor.
If nothing is found by time I get home from work, I will look online. Heard of TIGER DIRECT?Maybe start there.Wherever it is you look, make sure they take prepaid credit cards is all. Hope I do not sound cheap, just medium poor with my own bills. Lets see what comes of today and go from there.Doortech1

From what I read of the specs you posted, you could get by with something like this. http://compare.ebay.com/like/271130472416?var=lv<yp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar It is a hyperthreaded P4, which in effect would be almost as good as a dual core. It would be a drop in and go upgrade and the cheapest way to improve upon what you have.
