So the computer finally is showing it's age
Monday, January 14, 2013 by kona0197 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk
It's taken me awhile to start this thread, sorry. I know this may end up in flame wars. Again I am sorry.
So everyone knows my situation. Well those close to me on this site do. My computer is finally showing signs of how old it truly is. Keep in mind my computer has a Pentium 4 processor so I am guessing this setup to be almost ten years old. The problem, even after a few friends helped me here with a new hard drive and more memory, is the rest of the system. The processor can't keep up with the newer operating systems. I'm having a hard time just running XP. Found out the other day my DVD Burner drive is almost dead as it will read disc sometimes and other times it will not. Monitor is on it's last legs as well. Hard to read anything and the brightness is going out. It's an old CRT Dell monitor that is almost as old as the tower.
As Starkers had told you this computer is my main way to communicate with the things that are important in my life. So I was hoping someone out there had a few newer parts I could install to extend the life of the machine a bit. Nothing special. I already have DDR2 memory and a newer hard drive. Just need a few other things.
So carry on. Discuss I guess.

Kona, I have to tell you to make you laugh. At work, someone threw away a HP pavilion DV5, I took it from the tash. Has a remote for dvd playing which had the laptop in hibernate. So a 2.8 gig cpu upgrade and 2gig of ram cost me 56.00, now I have a smokin laptop, imo, for 56.00, and it is the first I ever owned. Hows that for a deal!

Sweet deal. Have fun with that laptop.
As I said before, I'm not going to get rid of this system. Just going to do some upgrades. ![]()

I did not ask why you posted, I get the asked for opinion, but that does not warrant trying to make a member feel like crap for his financial situation improving and having some luxury in life, which is too short and difficult as it is.Could have just passed on commenting instead of the attack you posted directed at Kona, for receiving freely given help. My thoughts......

Damn, is this thread still going. How many jobs ya had since the Jack in the Box job, Kona? Just wondering.

I'm afraid I am with the_Monk on this one [yet again].
700+ comments of 'history' regarding one member's dire straits and the subsequent assistance by others [some of whom are in more-dire straits].... culminating in an apparent reversal of fortune and no inkling of an attempt at restitution.
Maybe the words are all too big, but simply put....it's disappointing.
How about ... "thanks guys for the help....least I can NOW do is offer to cover your shipping costs.... before embarking on other spending".

What do you mean since Jack In The Box? I'm still working at Jack In The Box.
Jafo, with all due respect I understand what you are saying, I agree, yet it would take some time to do what you are asking. Besides no one has asked this of me, and I was merely asking for opinions, I never went through with any action. I'm not trying to be a dissapointment to anyone.
Moshi, thank you. I am working towards that goal, one of many.

Really?
It may be a few years before we can replace the whole machine.
[My emphasis in bold type]
Your reply#2, kona.

Unless I'am reading that wrong, your not working at Jack in the Box anymore. Your unemployed.

Some things can be achieved without any trying.
It's not about whether someone has asked or not...it's about how someone moves on after assistance is given.
If or when circumstances change it's simply polite to offer without being asked.
But hey....I'm not an educator of 'Morality 101'....and sometimes it takes more than bashing someone with a blunt implement to 'learn them right'....and I'm still in the midst of funeral arrangements...so you will simply have to DIY.

If someone needed the money for shipping returned, then it was not help, that is a loan.
I also do not recall a post from kona revealing any fortune, So now Kona has no morals, and is a piece of dirt because he accepted what was offered? I think this whole page of posters could do morality 101.
Wizard, RND, or any of those who did help, do you need help, ask, I will try and help you with shipping reimbursements.

You should have considered that second sentence better, dt1. We pointed out what appears to be a contradiction, and nothing more. No Moderator nor Admin called anyone the names you used in your reply above.
You're projecting onto us judgments we never made. No one wrote anything close to what you attributed to us.
We're veteran members of this Community (look at our membership dates) and haven't gotten to where we have by calling others such things.
I suggest you take a breather and reconsider your words.

dt1 I have been out of work since Oct 2010 myself. My unemployment ran out Dec 31st. The actual cash I am out was my wife's who works part-time and makes $4.25 an hour. To say we are struggling is putting it very mildly. If it makes me an ass to wish I had the cash back to reimburse my wife, well, so be it.
I felt good about helping out a member of a community that went well above the call of any "duty" to help me before.
I don't feel quite as good about helping out this particular "needy person" who now wants to act like he has money to burn.

As stated above (reply 718) , I do not need reimbursement. There are others that may.
I know Wiz's circumstances, as we talk daily. He needs all the help he can get. He is extremely below poverty level and he looks for work daily but things haven't been good for him in a long time, yet he did what he could to help out. I know he had to borrow money to fix their car and pay their power bill last month.
