the fall of customize?

Wednesday, April 24, 2002 by John Hamp | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

When I first discovered winamp skins I went to a site called customize.org. Then I went to skinz when cust dissapeared. But since cust has come back its become a haven for l33ts. What's the deal there? Whose in charge of the zoo there? Its just wallpapers and screenshots and they constantly attack Stardock's stuff. I read on deskmod the wb3 announcement and the cust admins were on attacking it there. Then on cust itself they attack it some more. What kind of skin site has admins that bad mouth new releases of the software they support on their site?

But but....if this site is going down then where can a skinner find a new home? (I've really been too busy in my skinning world to actually check messageboards and postings to see what has been going on). Any suggestions? Where did the old community go? Don't leave me behind! *awakes and looks around only to find everyone gone*

Blergh, I should read first - you are talking about _customize.org_, not this site. :/

juni dude, poke around at SkinBase, LotsOfSkins and VelocityArt a bit. Lots of idiots without attitudes (or harmless attitudes). You'll like it. Small sites are better!

craeonics notices someone used the "freedom of speech" arguument, which means this thread is permanently ruined by closed-mindedness.

By the way, nice quote, Dave, I hope people will get it.

LotsOfSkins is a great site. VelocityArt is a great site too. Skinbase is a great site too. I visit all of them daily as well as deviantART and Deskmod which everyone knows I'm very fond of as well but are "Bigger" sites like WC. When it comes to get skinnings, I tend to think bigger is better but for conversing, often times small sites are nice because of the intimacy.

We've tried for that here - we don't list the most recent discussions on the main board specifically so that we can have the message board be a little more intimate.

DavidK, that was a great quote.

juni, we don't lock threads, all we can do is delete them (which we don't do unless they get *really* out of hand, which this one has not). The post will die when people decide not to post anymore.

Each site is different.

I don't like Customize.org. I never did. I don't like the admins, i don't like the people, I just don't plain like it. So I don't go there. You won't catch me in an argument there for sure, I don't even know the URL anymore.

We actually take the policy that people who are disruptive are eventually banned (exiled) and posts if they get out of hand are deleted (or individual posts can be deleted as well those that's very rare). But typically the person being disruptive on the site is warned and then banned. That doesn't happen often either but occasionally you get people who make racist posts or use excessive profanity or mass personal attacks on someone, etc. We just don't want those kinds of people here.

The difference between the people who hang out here and the people on cust is that on cust there's a large population of people who just go out of their way to be nasty. There's a guy there called Max something or other whose the posterchild for that kind. Darwn may know him...

"Robohead says he doesn't come here often because the high and mighty attitude here, yet he still posts as Skinz.org, admin'd by shoggot, the king of high and mighty attitudes. "

A personal attack! I am wounded, sir.

So, will you be warning yourself first, or go straight to banning yourself? Since it's the first offense (in this thread, anyway) in recent times, I'd say a warning would be enough.

Here's hoping for prompt action by the admins. Can't have personal attacks here...
