Rating

Saturday, March 23, 2002 by adni18 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

Someone who is having a lot of complex, keep giving me rates 1 to my works with XP relating subject. Today I got rate 1 for my new wallpaper "XP-Roll".

Please don't tell me about the XP stuff, downloads etc, because this is not the case and it is not as it was before any more, if you know what I mean.

In the other hand, everybody are looking and nobody is acting. Is this a sense of community?

Don't you think that the anonymity in the rating system, is helping the cowards and the adulators to express their complex, in the most cases?

Anyone that _can_ rate has to be 'fairly' respected to have gained that ability, and I am a little surprised that someone like that would rate so spitefully/poorly.

I know how you feel adni, it's a cowardly way to dig at someone and has nothing to do with the merits of your work. When the Jriver site put a ratings system up someone went through and put 1's on most of my skins there. It really hurt my feelings that someone felt so bad towards me. I almost never leave ratings on anyone's work. I just leave a comment.

Whoever is doing it has a problem. Maybe it's related to the XP thing as you say, and I agree, that was over a long time ago. Your work is polished, professionaland extremely popular, and in no case, in no way ever deserves a rating of 1.

I tried, when it was done to my work, to figure out why it was done. Was it jealously over downloads? did I offend someone? but ultimately you can't know what the person is thinking or why they do such a thing. Which is what makes it so cowardly. Email me which pieces have been attacked and I'll go through and fix it.

If I'am not mistaken, on another thread someone was rated with a poor rating. I said in the by-laws that you had to be a journeyman to rate, but was informed that an apprentice could rate. If that is the case then it could be anyboby. I think that the rating should be tied into the comment. If you don't comment then the rating would not be accepted. That would solve that problem. Also it should be put back to a journeyman level and above. Or you could do away with the ratings altogether. Comments only. Ratings are very subjective anyway. If the skin works, then the only difference between them is the color or size. I might like this color on the skin and someone else might not. One gives it a good rating while the other doesn't. Who knows1

Thank you very much all of you, for your understanding and for your time you spend to answer to this tread.

DavidK, your comment make me feel better and I appreciate that. Thank you very much for your will to fix this unfairness, someone did it all ready, if it was you, I thank you again.

WiseOldMan,
you wrote "I think that the rating should be tied into the comment. If you don't comment then the rating would not be accepted" and I totally agree with you, I think that is the only fair solution for the rating system.

I totally agree with the idea to only allow a rating by leaving a comment. Would be a really good solution.

Ratings vs opinions vs "polling", we all know that statistically we will always have results to either extreme, may they be positive or negative. This is inherent and for as much as we would like to think is unchangable. There will always be those results that are not appropriate or fall outside our expectations. Whether is be the color of the skin, the font, or some other insignificant element, we can't please all of the people all of the time. It should be the average that we focus our attention, granted the number of ratings we obtain is never "satisfactory", but if we relied on others to determine our true "worth", what a scary proposition THAT would be!
I was unaware of the "requirements" as per the "bylaws" regarding who can rate, and who "cannot", however keep in mind you may be eliminating a positive result using this method as well as those ratings felt to be demeaning.
Consistantly, your work has been exceptional, this continues to hold true..............
Thanks for the opportunity to share my "two cents worth."

I reel the ratings should be abolished completely. Ratings are ridiculous. There are no guidelines, just personal taste.

Nikos: I will bring this up on the admins message board, because I totally agree with you too. There has to be a better way of doing this. Leave it with me.

I have received an e-mail today from a very talented skinner from our community, that is related to this thread.
This person teaches us a very valuable lesson about how to behave as artists in our field of skinning.
This artist quotes:
"After all, for us this should not be about who is best or worst, but the fact that we all enjoy doing it. I believe we learn from everyone and can admire each other's work."

I hope that all of us sould take this in to consideration, not only in skinning , but in every day life.

I personally would have no problem with a rating needing to be 'signed' by the person doing the rating.
I certainly have sufficient 'intestinal fortitude' to put my name to anything I rate...if needs-be.

"Rated 10 by Jafo"
or
"Rated 1 by Jafo"

Then the artist may take it or leave it as he/she sees fit...

Perhaps the admins can look into it and re-evaluate the access level of the person who is doing these ratings? I think that is a better solution than wrecking the rating system.

I could not refrain myself from commenting on jafo's suggestion
Yes yes yes yes....... That is the way to go, but as I have said in the past, this won't happen You have my vote jafo..... and if the person don't want their name posted on the rating they left.... then don't rate anyone's skin jafo it is the ONLY Fair way to go........ ok ok I'll go back to picking my nose

"Rated 10 by Jafo"

"Rated 1 by Jafo"

This sounds great Adni, but if this was the everyone felt, we wouldn't have the "Top Ten Downloads" and "Top Skin Authors" plastered on the page would we?

As for ratings, I would like for someone to explain why they are needed, but if we must have them..........

Ratings blow

I've not liked anonymous ratings since the official Sonique site. Although I deserved most of mine

Aye, ratings should be signed/traceable. It would deter many a would-be troll/spammer.
