SSD Tips and Tweaks

Come, share your tips!

Wednesday, April 25, 2012 by RedneckDude | Discussion: Personal Computing

Guys, I know a few of us have SSDs. I'm pretty sure more do than we know.

What say we all share any tips or tweaks we might have so we can all benefit from each other's knowledge.

Or maybe we can ask a question, someone else may have the answer.

I'll start by saying I have an OCZ Vertex Plus 120 GB.  Sata II on a Sata II Mobo.

Currently, I get the following stats when testing. I wonder how this compares with yours and if it can be tweaked.

I've changed nothing yet I'm getting a completely different reading today....

While some scores are better, the one that remains quite low compared to the first is 512k read at 130ish point below.  With varying things going on in the background I can understand fluctuating scores, but that one has me wondering.

I will investigate later, but right now I have an errand to run [walk, in my case].

Last Spring I had my Corsair drive on a Sata2  (3G) connection.

I just moved it to a SATA 6G connection.  Bottom line, no measurable difference.

This a SATA3g drive or 6g?  MSAHCI driver?

the MSAHCI driver in 7 only does 3g iirc.  8s does 6g.

I just ordered another SSD

256gb Vertex 4 to go with the 64gb M4 and 180gb Revo.  Now I can stop deleting and moving things around all the time (and banish the stupid HD.)

I have upgraded to an OCZ Agility 4 256 GB SSD (sata 3) and a sata 3 Mobo. MSI 970A-G46. Yrag helped me to get into AHCI mode. Here are the new stats.

Oh say HardOCPs SSD reviews mention

Steady State Testing

Steady State shows lower numbers that you will not see marketed, as this is the true speed experienced after several months of usage. Many processes are running in the background on the SSD processor and it does all it can to keep speeds as high as possible, but after time the SSD performance degrades, and it all comes down to a much lower state. Garbage Collection, Trim, and Write Combining attempt to minimize these effects, but the decline is inevitable. The SSD will eventually settle down into its final state, termed "Steady State."
