Close button visibility

Saturday, September 18, 2004 by smoke-tetsu | Discussion: Skinning

I was told that the close button has lots of options for visibility but I can't find those options in skinstudio specifically, "show if there is a close button" or "show if there is NOT a close button". So I was wondering if someone could help me out. What are the visibility settings to do those things so I can edit them manually into the uis file?

Click the button in the Preview area. In the right tree view area, click Visibility to expand the list. That's what you're looking for.

"When is there NOT a close button on a window? "

Ooh, riddles, I like those!
Reminds me of an old Batman episode.

I looked there but it's not there that's why I was asking to see if anyone knows the code you are supposed to put in.. Ugh... And yes it is possible for a window to not have a close button. Sheesh instead of getting answers I get more questions. Frogboy said in the comments for the transparency article that the option is supposed to be in there but no answer as to what the number is that I'm supposed to put in and like I said I can't find it in the list of visibility options in skinstudio. I only ask a question as a last resort, how frustrating. If it was as obvious as looking in the list of visibility options and finding it I would have already instead of asking if anyone knew how. What is the version of skinstudio that supposed to have the feature in it? What I want to do is show a disabled close button if there is no close button but there is a min or max button but no button at all if there are neither min or max.

I thought you were just using that as an example. I had no idea you could have a window with no close button. I've never seen one.

That's because WB usually doesn't have the option to not show it if there isn't one. But MS Styles do have that function built in. However Frogboy said there is that option in WB but so far hasn't said how so I was hoping someone knew.

Let me restate that......... I've never seen a window that couldn't be closed with a close button. If a window didn't actually have one, the visible close button wouldn't do anything. So I'm still confused. What sort of window doesn't have a close button?

Koasati told you the correct place to look...all window buttons have a visibility setting

Use visual styles for a while and you will see which windows don't have them. Also could I get some help rather than resistance? What purpose does it serve to give me resistance? I must be blind then because I haven't found it yet in skinstudio either that or I don't have the right version (and I can't upgrade because my subscription ran out recently and I don't have the money yet). So could someone PLEASE tell me the setting so I can manually put it in instead of giving me the run around? If you don't know the setting or are unable to help say so and forever hold your peace. Before you go tell me that all buttons have visibility settings go look and see if you can find the settings for the close button.

Sorry, wasn't trying to be resistant, nor giving you the run around, I'm just curious. I never even considered such a setting, so I have no idea how you would set it in WB. (I'm not about to use msstyles just to see a window without a close button. I'm not that curious.)  )   Your best bet would probably be to hit the SkS newsgroup, or the Stardock chat, and ask the developer himself.

Why wouldn't "always visible" work?

Because there is a certain effect I'm trying to go for and this would help http://www.jasoco.net/data/ss/full/2003-05-18.jpg . Why can't I put in features I want without being questioned? You aren't going to run this skin anyway so it doesn't matter to you what features it has. If other skinning systems\OS' can do it I don't see why I shouldn't be able to if WB allows it. I'd really appreciate it if no one knows the answer that they would not post a reply it's counter-productive.

I'm not "questioning you"........... I just want to understand (it's the technician in me), simple is that. But that's fine, you keep your secret, I'll shutup now......

I didn't find it because it's not there. I asked on the skinstudio newsgroup and I was told (by Greenreaper) that the function isn't in WB. So there's no way it could be in skinstudio considering that. Are you telling me that you are seeing the option in there? You're obviously not understanding what I am trying to do. And no one has provided any proof that it is in there. What I want is to have a disabled button (not to be confused with out of focus) for the close button when there is not one and have that disabled state only show if there is a min or max button present. I've looked in skinstudio many times and it has not presented it'self. So either I have really bad eyes or it's not there.

Now I see, sorry I didnt understand exactly what you were going for.SS can create any button of course with the states you want...wether or not WB can implement it is another question.

The most important question here is what kind of window dosnt normally have a close button...you never said.

Your correct that there is no visibility setting for 'show if a window has no close button'.But you might be able to fake it by combining other settings or maybe making one up.

Question...if you run a normal WB,is there a close button visible on them with that type of window...if there is...what state does it show?

Again, sorry for not being more alert...I was on drugs...(sleep meds)

Take a look at this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v447/Adia06/closebuttonstuff.jpg

The top one is classic, middle is MS Styles, Bottom is WB (with a theme I'm working on). So I tried setting the visibility on the close button to not show if there is no min or max button before but it also stopped showing on windows that have neither but still have a close button which isn't what I wanted it to do and both classic and MS Styles do it. So I need visibility options for the close button it'self. Understand now? I want to set it so if ANY button is present the disabled buttons show up disabled but if there is no button none show up. But I get conflicting reports, Frogboy says there are lots of visibility options, greenreaper said last night that WB doesn't have the feature yet. So I'm just going to have to wait (more).

And BTW, yes WB does show a close button on that type of window (as you could see) and that's because it doesn't have the visibility option (as far as I know, according to Frogboy there are a lot of visibility options) the close button on the WB shot does work. However the point here is not to say that since it works then I should be forced to have it when all other systems have the other options. On WB it obviously sends a close message to the window but that works because there is a close function on the window even on the 2 first shots (which is any of the push buttons in the dialog it'self). When you push close on WB it assumes a negative answer to the dialog question.

Like I said, I only ask a question when\if I already tried the alternatives such as faking it. Right now I just have it always showing but *I* want to add the function.

Oh and BTW I didn't remember the windows off the top of my head because I don't use MS Styles or classic all the time to find out. And I didn't feel I needed to as a prerequisite for a person tp tell me the visibility option setting to stick into my UIS file if it indeed exists. All I want is a simple "this is the setting... *and then the person says the setting*" or if the person knows for sure that the setting is not in WB yet they say something to the effect of, "It's not currently in WB yet". Or if they don't fit either of first two they say nothing at all.

We 're so sorry we didnt grasp the full meaning of your initial question.
We're also sorry our attempts(feeble tho they were) to understand your problem annoyed you.(by asking for clarification).
And we're REALLY sorry we will never get to use your skin. (I missed the fact that you were not planning to share)

I forget...why were we trying to help you?

If ms styles does what you want, why do you need WB?(sorry, thats another question)

Your a whiny bugger.

Hold on guys. I think I'm beginning to grasp what he wants to do. Are you creating a Mac theme? If so, and you want the button to be clear when you're not mousing over it, just set the regular image of the button to be clear, and then when you mouseover it, have it change to the coloured version. You dont need any visibility crap at all. Assuming thats what you want to do.

No, cerebroJD that's not what I was trying to do. It has nothing to do with mousovering (or anything simple like that) it has to do with whether the window has certain buttons or not which buttons it shows which I've already explained. Show disabled buttons for the buttons unless there are no buttons which then it would show no buttons. This specifically was for the close button.

And no I.R. Brainac I don't want to use MS Styles just so that dialog windows like I show above will correctly show their titlebar as I want all the other features that WB has. I don't need those types of questions.

Since WB doesn't have the feature yet according to Greenreaper and none of the fake ways fit the bill for me then I don't see any point of trying further to "help" especially when the "help" is just saying things like, "Why don't you just use MS Styles" or "Why doesn't always visible work" or some stuff like that.

As far as me being called a whiney bugger goes I'll just take it as a compliment. =p BTW, the reason why I said you probably won't be using my skin anyway as gauging your responce to my ideas my skins probably won't be your bag, but they are going to be released when they are done.
