While PC users seem obsessed in having a dock on their PC and use programs like ObjectDock to try to get something similar to what is on MacOS X, not all Mac users are enthralled by the Mac dock.

I've tried every combination of dock, start menu, object bar, litestep and launcher etc. out there. I have reverted back to just plain windows taskbar. It is by far the easiest most convenient for me. I never could understand the dock thing, I could never leave them running for mrore than a couple of minutes. I just don't get it ,there is so much about them that is plain wrong. Which the article does a great job of pointing out.

I kind of like the dock, it definitely has a cool element to it. I don't think it is all that conducive to an effective working environment though. For example it really gets in the way at work where I use CAD and Engineering programs and at home my PC is primarily used as a gaming rig. I think it makes a very cool alternative to the quicklaunch feature.
Seems the whole issue is pretty simple, you like it or you don't, you use it or you don't. I can't understand why folks are so attached to any system, progam, etc. that they are willing to demean or belittle someone over it.

Environments are different.
What people need to do are vastly different.
Thank goodness there are different tools out there to allow each one of us the choice to choose what makes our jobs easier.

I love the dock, it makes neigh everything more convenient for me to get to, easy to see, and speeds up my work. On top of all that it's pretty as all get out.

The whole reason any of us are even reading this is because in some form or another, we like eye-candy! That's what this whole website and Object Desktop is about. But, it's not for everybody. I have friends and relatives who think I'm nuts. Yeah, they think my desktop is cool looking but they are not IMPRESSED with my icons or my skins. I think it's the coolest thing you can do to your PC. Do I like the Dock? Object Dock is funtional and cool-looking. What more could I want?
Of course, I also like to see how Mac people defend their "honor". And anytime a question like this is posed, you have one or more somebody's who call everybody else (PC users) something like retards or they say something like "This is how it is done in the Mac World as if, being mere mortals, we could not understand the OBVIOUS superiority of the Mac. Somehow they think objective crticism of the Mac or its OS or its look is a personal cut. It's fun just to watch the fireworks.

I've used OSX off and on for awhile (though not the latest incarnation,) and I've finally got my iBook coming soon (whee!) and I just have to say, so far, from my experience the dock is easily one of OSX's weakest points. For my use. It's often cumbersome and quite inefficient in my use. :/
OS9's applications menu was nice, and slick (even though I agree with the article - corner activation was what it /truly/ needed.) Even Windows' taskbar makes finding and INDENTIFYING the right application or document easier and quicker.

I like the Dock. I'm making an assumption here, but it seems that those who prefer it are those new to Macs while those who've used them don't like them as much. Still, I do agree with some of those issues, especially the last one.

I hope they are not trying to stop the making of ObjectDock. Maybe the team want to know what the members have to say to make their descision. ObjectDock works fine with windows. You bearly know it's there until you need a fast shortcut or to please your eyes

The dock is great - that article is old and out of date (i.e. icons in the dick DO have labels and Excel/Word/etc. docs DO looks different, and so on). As a personal computer user since 1976 (MITS Altair) and a power user of Mac & PC, I can state the PC has NOTHING on the Mac...except it makes a better gaming platform.

I've been using OS X since the week of release back in 2001 and absolutely love the dock, right out in the open - magnification and all. 
Judging by the shareware this author recommends I'm thinking he's an OS9 die-hard. I have tried DragThing off and on over the years but not enough to keep it. I can make the dock do whatever I need.

I use the OD as sort of a quick launch replacement. I like the taskbar on the top of the screen, and I keep the OD small on the bottom.
Desktops are cutomizable for a reason: Everyone has different tastes. Look at your acutal decktop. Does everyone keep their stapler in the same place?

This article has actually been around for quite some time, so I am surprised it is "news." One thing to realize is that Tog is part of NN/g -- check out useit.com and you will see that the firm concentrates on usability at the expense of almost all else. Soooo, this article was written in the same vein. Inflammatory, interesting and ultimately just fodder for people to sound off on.

i enjoy the dock.. i think it could have some more customizability like object dock and its kk menus, but make it smaller, or hide it, and its a great way to navigate your most commonly used items. i'm one of the scrubbers.. i have smaller icons that get larger when i glide over them so i have a nice non-eyestraining icon to easily focus on and select.
for the record, i think the windows start menu is actually very well thought-out.
