How fast is your connection

Saturday, January 3, 2004 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

This has been around a bit but it's still useful for those of you wondering how good your Internet connection is. ZDNet has a bandwidth tester that will give you an idea of how good your connection is.

My cable modem is through Comcast and tested at 1.665 megabits per second.

Out of interest, how much do you pay for broadband internet in the rest of the world? In the UK, it can cost anywhere from £19/month ($34 converted) to £30/month ($54 converted), for a 512kbps connection. A 2 megabit connection is quite rare over here, with prices ranging from £37/month ($66) for an ISP who uses their own ADSL hardware instead of BT's, to upto around £80 ($143) for some ISPs that use BT's wholesale lines (as most do).

Forgot to say that upload is mainly only 256kbits, on all speeds of residential ADSL line. Not sure what it is for cable broadband.

Here in Montreal, on cable that test showed: 2331 kbps

I don't know exactly how it translate into kb/s, tho as I frequently download at speeds between 450 kb/s and 500 kb/s as my connection is rated at 4 Mbps (upload is capped at 80 kb/s).

Someone mentioned price: 60 bucks canadian/month (unlimited upload and download)

If you didn't know, all Comcast users will be upgraded to 3.3mbps (for no additional charge). This should be completed soon; go here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/comcast to see if (or when)you have been upgraded--powercycle your modem.

My speed--3.3mbps down/256kbps up
