The Skinbrowser is almost here...

Saturday, April 27, 2002 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

We haven't come up with a name yet for it. SkinBrowser just seems too generic. We're currently thinking of calling it - WinCustomize!

The skinbrowser bypasses all the HTML stuff and goes directly to the underlying database that drives the site. See the screenshot.

The skinbrowser will be available to users who subscribe to WinCustomize. Subscriptions will become available in the next few weeks - $19.95. Not only will users get the skin browser but unlimited downloads, exclusive skin packs, and some surprises we're working on that won't be available until later.

If anyone has any thoughts on a proper name for the program (maybe calling it WinCustomize is the way to go, we're not sure), post here.

What, I ask you, is better at changing its appearance than a CHAMELEON? (Or, perhaps, a CHAMELEOWIN?)

The chameleon is our logo.

How about WinCustomizer or WinCustomize Browser? As for the price, is that per month?

Direct query to the Database supplying the ASP content. Saves you having to deal with the HTML UI of the website,,, I would imagine (but don't quote me on this being a feature) that you can make more robust queries through this program than you can through the web site (IOW, find ALL OS/2 related skins, regardless of program, instead of the current hunt-by-library that the web site allows)

I remember when skinz.org offered a similiar program with the name SkinBrowser. So I'm looking forward to it. I just wondered if it will also provide an update to any news, or will we have to visit the site for that?

Check out the screenshot. It should make that clear.

The SKinz.org skinbrowser was pretty cool. The only downside is that it relied on HTML windows for most of it. This skin browser does have some HTML windows in it but for the most part it's done as a GUI.

For instance, in the final version, the message board will be abstracted to be like a news reader.

Another nice thing is that we hope to eventually make it very multithreaded so that while you are looking at one thing, if the site has updated, it can optionally update various parts of itself in the background so clicking on sections and skins and other things is very fast.

So all these skins that people upload and create for free your now thinking about charging to download? Have you gotten permission from all the "skinners" to sell their stuff on a subscription basis? Off the cuff this kind of upsets me. If you are going to do this then it should be part of Object Desktop as one of the items you get. I can't see paying to download skins. I would probably just move on to some of the other sites and I would think that the "skinners" would probably upload their skins somewhere else because they won't get the visibility because folks have to pay to download. You may want to re-think this aspect.
