Sizes for each separate part of skin
Friday, November 6, 2009 by diva42 | Discussion: Skinning
I am completely stuck with skinstudio 6.4 I was told to study other peoples skins which I have done with a few, I want to know what
Size to make each individual section ex. start menu top what size am I supposed to create it in photoshop?
Ther are no tutorials that I found to help the wiki doesnt help me nothing online leads me to understanding how to even make a
beggining there has to be a starting point what size is the start menu each skin Ive looked at all have different sizes so how am I
supposed to know if I should make it 1024x768 or 300x500 really there has to be a set size somewhere.
The only thing I do know is the wallpaper sizes which doesn't help me in the least as that is not sent into skinstudio for adding to
the skin.
What am I failing to understand?
Thanks, Lisa

Ok I solved it I had to recrop leaving a bit more room above the top for some reason if the crop is snug it winds up like that.
Thanks Lisa

Best ways to learn...open a skin that works correctly by a good author and poke around.
If you ever just want to see how big something is just replace its image with a flat colored image (black or white or whatever).
Windows will then display it at its needed size...which you can screenshot and measure.
But,its really arbitrary what size to produce the actual graphic at because small graphics will stretch or tile to fill out the needed size. ![]()

Now my next adventure is how to remove the icon on the top of the start menu and can I over ride the text too?

Start menu/ Top part/ extra tab/ scroll down to hide the user picture and check enabled.
To remove the text: in the same extra tab area find vertical text shift. Make it -1000

Those 2 options are under the Extra tab for the user pane (top part)
BUT you can insert this code into the code editor section of the top part
......................
HideUserPicture=1
TextHorzShiftNormal=250
...........................
Then you can change the 250 to whatever you need 250 = # of pixles shfited to the left

Thanks it worked but the setting for the text I had to use 1100 instead because the negative didn't work for me.

nice to see you haven't gotten to discouraged diva42 and you definitely couldn't ask for better people to be getting advice/assistance from than the ones who are giving it ![]()

Ok.
1. I would suggest using a .png/.tga with a transparent background for that image (I try to avoid .bmp with magic pink when ever possible).
2. You have too much extra canvas on the end of the image. The startbutton has 5 states, so if you have a section at the end it messes up the spacing of the states. Look at this example:

I added the gray background to illustrate where the canvas ends. The actual image should have a blank background.
