I can't create a link here.

First do this but don't go there yet. Copy this url:

antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html

This will take you to an archive nasa has been accumulating for some time. I accidently stumbled on it while futzin' with BK's 'puter this morning. There is a list of dates and the image that was taken that day. The first one I went to was 2009/3/29......Signals from a strange universe. OMG!

Check out these other dates. Some are awesome.

2009/3/12

        3/10

        2/22

        2/10

        1/11

2008/12/29

You get the idea. There are so many beautiful images of the universe out there. I give the creator a +10

I sometimes dream about them and always do I wish I was there. My favorite is the Spectre in the Veil. Awesome!

ET doesn't come here because:

* mankind's intellect is inferior and he can't laugh at any of our jokes.

* we have swine flu

* our women have only 2 breasts... and a third is important to him

* we have bankers

* our fuel prices are too high and he mightn't be able to afford to get home.

* he'd like to invest in our planet but doesn't trust our stockmarkets.

* he's worried that he'd end up as a medical experiment... and mating with the native women wouldn't be a part of it.

* that the experimenters wouldn't use lubricant during the anal probes.

* GM, Ford & Chrysler are going broke and he may not be able to get spare parts if needed.

* we have bankers.... and hiding his money in his sock is uncomfortable, it makes him limp.

Seriously, images of space, both far and near have always fascinated me... there are far too many extraordinary landscapes and textures not to be totally gobsmacked at their existence/creation.

As for ET's, well yeah, I DO believe in their existence.  We may not have conclusive proof that they're living among us, serving as presidents, politicians or CEO's of large corporations, but nor do we have conclusive proof they do not exist.  To me, it is extremely arrogant of mankind, supposedly the supreme beings in all creation, to think we are the only intelligent life in the entire universe.

ET IS out there somewhere, and he may well have visited our lowly planet, but there are those who deem we are not ready to digest that information, and thus have covered it up... so-say to protect us from ourselves/mass panic, etc.  Yup, that Orson Welles has a lot to answer for... had he not broadcast 'War of the Worlds' and put the fear of Christ up everyone, governments wouldn't have created places like Area 51 to hide shit they don't want us to see.

Another reason I believe in ET's:  I awoke one morning to find 3 distinct depressions in triangular formation on my lawn, with a burned area of grass in the centre.  The Defence Dep't wrote it off as BBQ accident and went away... but I don't got one of those kettle-type BBQ's on a tripod stand.

BTW, Uvah.... great link and thank you.

I figured with all there is out there how can ET not exist. A guy by the name of Drake said it a long time ago with a simple equation. In our milky way there about 150 to 200 billion stars. Take 10% of that to be G type yellow dwarfs like ours, 15 to 20 billion of 'em. Take 10% of that with planets (latest total of extrasolar worlds is 300) and you have 1.5 to 2 billion. Another 10% if the planets lie within the habitable zone. That is close enough for liquid water. Ours is 93 million miles from the sun.

Ten % of those have sentient life, 150 to 200 million. Ten % of those are post industrial, 15 to 20 million. Another 10% have spaceflight capability similar to or a bit ahead of us. THat narrows it down to 1.5 to 2 million just starting to explore their home systems. Another 10% are actively searching out other cultures. So when you get right down to it there could be as many as 100,000 or more ET cultures out there. Now multiply that by the number of galaxies in the universe. Deep sky digital surveys estimate the number of galaxies in the universe to be on the order of 350,000,000,000 +/- a few billion. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the odds favor life on other worlds.

Other reasons ET doesn't come here:

* he can't find a decent interpreter who'll relate that he's come in peace and just isn't here after our women.

* he's observed that we're a warmongering, violent lot and he doesn't want to get his balls shot off for coming to say howdy.

* he's worried that with our primitive intellects we will have have him caged like an animal and poke sticks at him.

* that given Microsoft and Apple's efforts at technology, he's concerned the trading of innovative technological ideas will be a one way street and he'll leave with OS_X and/or a Windows ME

* that if there is a trade of cultural traditions, etc, his home planet will fall into decay should they be widely adopted.

* he is repulsed by all the greed and corruption that's running rampant throughout every society on Earth.

In other words, what self-respecting ET would want to visit mankind when we have little or nothing to offer a species that's capable of inter-stellar travel.  If he comes in peace we are intellectually, culturally inferior.  If he comes to enslave us as a workforce, we proven with the advent of Win ME that we're not up to par.... and if he comes to wage war, our peashooters (in comparison) would not make it a worthwhile challenge and the conquest would reveal we have nothing he wants or needs

Truth is, ET won't come here and reveal himself until we as a species have grown up considerably and get ourselves out of the Stone-Age, intellectually and culturally....  and then lose the barbarism we humans have practised since the dawn of time.

Sounds harsh, don't it... but for what little good we've achieved, we've done twice as much harm: ie; A-bombs; biological weapons of mass destruction: World and other wars; corporate greed leaving miliions living in poverty and starving, and our systematic destruction of our own environment.

Yup. ET is scared we'll stuff up so badly that we need emigrate/evacuate to his planet... and the last thing he needs is a bunch of primitives (GWB's, environmental terrorists and bankers) stuffing things up there.

Far fetched???  Maybe... maybe NOT!!!!

Well it occurred to me that I were an ET, there'd be little here of value to me... that the dominant species has proven over the centuries to be a pack of morons with little or no clue as to how a truly civilised society should conduct itself.

There are, by all means, some great human being with admirable qualities, but by and large, they are completely and hopelessly outnumbered/overwhelmed by self-gratifying imbeciles hell bent on personal advancement at any cost.... even if it means depleting the World's resources and eventually leaving it a barren wasteland incapable of supporting life.

Our intergalactic neighbours do NOT want any part of us until we become truly civilised, compassionate and nurturing of our fellow man and the environment that sustains life as we know it.  We are nowhere near humble enough to be considered friends/partners to a species that can not understand why we WILL NOT learn from our mistakes.... we simply are not worthy.

Another reason ET doesn't come here: after being weightless in space for lomng periods, he has difficulty using our toilets.

ET does not come here because...

...this planet is a stinking cesspool

Seriously, why would any being intelligent enough to have warp drive want to come here? That is, other than to wipe out the planet's human infestation.

On that note of cheer, all I can say is that while there are few reasons to visit this planet, I think I've identified two:

ETs doesn't come because...

*they can't make a profit off backwater planet like earth.

*their federation forbids inference with primitive societies on earth (like prime directive)

*they are afraid they will lose their money and ship due to cutthroat capitalists or bankers.

*they are interested only in space traveler societies.

and the number one of all...

*they saw all the movies and are afraid of how bad-ass humans are because of all the aliens they managed to defeat so far, and they don't want humans to come after them...

Starkers hit the nail on the head. Here's my take on ET addressing the UN.

"Help you? You have the gaul...to ask that of me? We came to your world because there are those among us who feel that this planet might make a valuable addition to our community. However from what I and my associates have seen in the way you conduct yourselves day to day I doubt you'll ever receive the aid you requested.

One: You are a predatory species who seems to take delight in the ending of life.

Two: There is one continent that has been at war with itself for the last 2 millenia. Why is that. Here is an answer you may not have considered. If those powers that be in the region actually wanted peace you would have had it already. So obviously they do not want it. Rich people tend to get richer at the expense of those who are unfortunate enough to be caught in the middle.

Three: Your world is dying. Sea levels are rising. There is widespread deforestation. How do you expect your planet to breathe if you choke it. Pollution is rampant. Your Golden Gate Bridge is a perfect example. Who can see it?!?

Four: This is a point we find difficult to reconcile it is so abhorent...a small child is struck down with a life threatening illness. This child's parents are hard workers, pay their taxes on time and do without many basics to provide the necessary health insurance to protect their baby. The cure that 'can' save this child's life is extremely expensive. The insurance company refuses to cover the expense. Thus is the baby condemned to death. By what right do you allow such.

Five: You are barbaric, intolerant, bigoted, prejudiced to an extreme. You thrive on materialism, wealth and the accumulation of that wealth. To us it seems you worship this monetary entity you call the dollar. You obsess over it. Kill for it. Do anything imaginable up to and including selling your offspring to gain even more.

We will leave to yourselves. Here there is nothing for us. I will not allow my people to be exposed to this barbarism. Perhaps there will come a day when you mature enough to realize the mistakes you are making. But somehow I doubt it considering your track record to date. Your history is repeating itself it seems endlessly. War follows war. Conflict follows conflict. Death follows death. If you survive we may be back but don't hold your breath.

My point exactly!  While there are some admirable human beings on this planet, there's nowhere near enough of them with the power and influence to make a real difference.   Millions died in wars to defeat Hitler and like-minded dictators who went on rampages of wholesale slaugher of the innocent, yet today we have Hitler-like scum walking free among us with impunity.  They may not have pulled the trigger, dropped the bombs, but their greed and actions have caused as much if not more collateral damage to the human race... and it stinks that governments legislate to make it legal collateral damage, because they too profit from the misery inflicted upon those they were elected to serve.

If I were ET, I wouldn't bother to address the UN.  For the most part it is a toothless tiger (N Korea, Iran continuing to develop weapons of mass destruction under its very nose) and ET would view the UN as a bunch of bickering schoolboys with selective hearing who doth protect too much and procratinate even more.  ET would be wasting his breath addressing that waste of space pack of hypocritical morons.

Nope, If I were ET, I'd come back in the Stone Age. Sure they were killing each other, but mostly for survival... and then it wasn't wholesale bloodshed using weapons of mass destruction to wipe out entire villages/societies, etc.... but at least ET could have taught them things, better ways to survive without the need to kill.  If only this had happened, the World today would be a much better place, and perhaps ET would be our friend and share his knowledge with us.

Ain't gonna happen in my lifetime, tho..... mankind may call itself civilised because we live in technological societies and use appliances to simlify our daily lives, but the bottom line is, we are as primitive and more barbaric than our cave dweller predecessors... ands ET ain't gonna have a bar of that.
