Moderators, read here!

Monday, November 5, 2007 by sublime187 | Discussion: WinCustomize Talk

im not saying this to aggravate anyone of you but i would like to tell you my ideas of moderator ratings and protocols.......
and i do consider the fact that a bunch of people uploading causes the need for more bandwidth or site performance issues.and i know that can possibly be why you guys are so strict on what gets uploaded....(i might be wrong) BUT:::

when a skin or wallpaper goes through "moderation" it shouldnt be judged by moderators in a sense of quality it should only be judged on copyright infringement protocol, and antiprofanity protocol.

you should let the consumers/end users/downloaders choose wheather its good or not and how can anyone do that if its stuck on a non directly accessed site which is its makers profile?? if it were place in the gallery automatically the maker would know almost within a few days if its any good or not! one persons likings are different from anothers.

more simply put, if the moderators dont like what you have rendered or made in a illustration program or whatever you use, it shouldnt matter to them! because thats the moderators opinion, not the opinion of the people downloading!

for and example, i actually browsed all the way from 5 star- to 2stars and saw all kinds of professionaly done wall papers and skins rated at 2 stars! and some of the two star rated content was way better than the 5 star stuff!

im finished bitching you ge my drift!

Hey Kenwas, I'm sure a fair share of people might have been fooled into thinking a couple of your walls were real.. awesome work.

Thank you! I would have to live in a really strange place or be able to fly to get those shots though!

I keep reading that this isn't an art site, but in the next breath, skinners are referred to as artists (which they certainly are). It really is a site for art that relates to customization and any tools or mediums that achieve that end are welcomed it would seem to me.

i hate to sound cold but how can i tell which moderator likes my work?????

You can start by seeing if any mod gives you a good  comment on your work.

I've gotten very few comments on my work by actual mods. The coolest thing that happened was in IRC chat. A Stardock/WC employee whom I never heard from before PM'd me and said they wish they could get my autograph. Then they posted a link. It was to a wall I had done over a year ago. THAT was cool. Oh, the wallpaper was the first official 'Troll Thumping Day' wall.

Doesn't Skinhit constantly follow you around with pen and pad begging for your enlightenment?

Not to say I do not wish this to happen to you Kenwas... But I'm sure you remember "Xoxroth" from Bloody olé England. A very well known and I must say great 3D artist. His work can be viewed here
WWW Link
Which got so good at doing these 3d works of art! He moved on to selling his work and stop posting here at Wincustomize.
I do also remember when Xoxroth first started posting at this site. At first they where not accepted. Then after a short while things got recognized and his postings where placed up on the site. Sure would be nice to see him back here posting again. Got to famous and has a better place now I assume.
Moderation here has always been a issue with art-works of many different values. Any member must accept the fact that he/she does not have the right {or that is "own"} to make their works be posted. The site has to be moderated for the simple reason. It is a site for windows customizations. A lot has been written and discussed on this subject to the end result being..."this is what it is". Fortunately members here do have their place to post photos to their own website. Which is inside of this main site. Being recognized is a whole different matter though. It is always good for any artist to just post other works with notes or that is links to his/her photos section. This makes it nice for you and your personal friends. Plus the fact that other visitors who have the ability to view your site. Will also take notice of your photos.
I think it is a good offering for members to take advantage of this. But it always seems we want and want more than we have.
The other ways to posting photos is to build and present your own space here on the web. With a site such as my space or the like.
The moderations here are fair to the site and to the members. We have to realize that things are made to work for the proper reasons. "Oh and I'm sure you are going to see someone else that passed the moderations to get their photo posted!" If this is what you really want ... then just keep trying with better works for the proper posting. With lots of patience and time... with the right post {artwork}! You will get a photo worth the posting posted to the gallery.
But keep this in mind... making a big fuss about it is going to get the negative reaction from members and that of the moderators for this website. You can not make these people bend the rules for your wishes. But you can act correctly and be noticed for what is a good work of art here. Give it a try and just have more patience.

Oh and Kenwas..~! Your getting to good at what you do~!~!!!...

Po...I like a goodly proportion of your stuff.....more as graphics/art than something I'd grab as a wall.

I like Nuvem's work for similar reasons...[few are my cup of tea as walls go...but many are some of the best digi-art you'll likely find ANYWHERE on the net]...

ok.. after reading all of this the only conclusion I can come to is that there should be a butt-load of walls that are in personal pages. my question is this: How to I find them? or how do they find mine? I just uploaded the wall to go with the skin I've been working on. The skin is going slowly, but the wall was easy so I figured I'd go ahead a post it. It was approved and put on my personal page. Was a little confused about that since I KNOW I did NOT check the "load to personal page only" box, but now I know why its there. so once again how do I know something new has been loaded by someone I don't know but may have just posted the very thing I've been looking for? are member pages included in the results if I search for a wall?
I'm loading stuff to share,if its stuck in my personal page how are others going to find it unless I run to the forums and post "LOOK WHAT I DID!!" like a 5 year old every time?

For personal pages, it's just like if you had your own site somewhere, you'll just need to promote it.  As you spend more time on the site, more people will become familair with you and your work, and often they'll just go directly to your site instead of browsing the galleries.

Even for skinners whose work goes into the public gallery, many of them I just browse via the personal page because it's easier to find their stuff that way.

Personal pages (ranked with photos)

Add a sig to your page on your posts (something tasteful )
Add a link to all your submissions so that those that make the main gallery direct users to your personal site
Submit to other sites with a link to WC

Jeez I'm ranked way down there (#170).
And how odd that only NetBadger stands between Skinhit and Po'

I thought the same thing.  Be nice if there were more options to recount for the last week, last month, last 6 months, last year, and last 5 years.

Nice sig!

It funny too, I added once to my own site as well and the photos were not allowed in my own site. The site is not my own, my subscription is also not mine either evidently even though I paid for it. I know I don't know how to do alot with the walls I make for my computer out of pictures that I take. I have never learned how to make a zip file or change the sizes of my pictures so yes I have been told several times not to put personal pictures in here, however if you look at the walls you will see personal pictures of peoples kids, their cars, and several other personal things as well. I don't feel anymore like I am "picked on" I just have been told so many times that my stuff isn't good enough that I just give up. Really, like I said it's up to me to choose not to upload anything, avoid making anyone angry, funny the mod sounds angry when posting comments to me  but I can't control how they feel. I just see things posted that I would concider personal pictures and when I do it they get upset. Don't worry, I know being a mod is hard sometimes, I have to moderate several sites as well and reject stuff because people don't know what simple rules are regarding posts. I get it, I am not an artist, nor do my photos belong here. Thank You And Have A Great Day.

mschleisner ...there is specifically a section in a personal site for photographs...especially such things as that fave one of Fido the pet.

If you have a photo/image being rejected even though it is intended for your personal page that will be ONLY because you are attempting to upload it to your [personal] wallpaper gallery...and, as with anyone's wallpapers going anywhere, personal or public they are actually supposed to be wall proportion as well as suitable/passable through the moderation process.

Putting your photographs directly into your photo gallery [read NOT 'wallpaper gallery'] is not moderated.  Anything goes [as long as it is not porn/racist/etc].  These images can be any size...any content you wish.

Here is mine....yours would be similarly named....[replacing the 'Jafo' with your nick]

http://jafo.wincustomize.com/photos.aspx

Now....if you look there you will find all sorts of images....even of my cat.  Just the place for what you were intending to submit via the wallpaper gallery upload process.

That is hardly going to appeal to anyone as a wall......other than maybe me and my 2 sisters....except the latter are not 'into' computers...so that leaves me...the rug-rat in the pic.

http://mschleisner.wincustomize.com/photos.aspx  is most likely your link to the same facility/feature of Wincustomize.com, accessible to all who wish it.

I need to apologise on behalf of any mod who may have appeared to you as 'angry'.  My guess is it is more likely to be a touch of 'frustration' towards the recurrence of misplaced submissions.

http://jafo.wincustomize.com/photos.aspx?cmd=addphoto&a=1&type=2

That is my 'add photo' link....it is direct and unmoderated, as is yours....

For personal pages, it's just like if you had your own site somewhere, you'll just need to promote it.

Let me just add to that and remind people they have their own site URL.  For instance mine is http://islanddog.wincustomize.com

You can put this in your forums signatures on other sites you visit, put it in your email sig, make a banner and link the url, there are many possiblities.

Doing this will get people to visit your page.

I like the moderating system of WC. I consider the stuff with rating 2 and a half as worth considering. But there can be separate critics avg. rating and users avg. rating for each work.
I think if one knows that it is a master skin or the author is a well known one then one will estimate it to be better, no matters if one is moderator or a regular downloader. If a simple and average skin is posted by a well known skinner then it may get more stars than the avg. skin posted by a begginer.

I realize they are totally different, as one is PC generated with programs such as teragen and one is camera generated then manipulated by PC.

As of date I have yet to upload a 3D render, as seeing works like yours and others, I have yet to feel good enough to attempt it..

MY use of the / was meant to be seen as an "and" not an inclusion .my bad

WC is a specific art site, as the art here is of a PC customization nature. meaning WC caters to art that is specific to customizing a PC. In Wallpapers This would mean that wallpapers deemed usable for Desktop wallpapers are typically let in, while others would not..

DA is an art site in the fullest sense, as they accept all sources of art from drawings to paintings to Poetry and any and all in between... it is a place for the next picaso's and Jean Jacques Rousseau's to share their art with others of the same mind set, as well as get exposure to thos who are curious...DA also has a Desktop customization area but it is not the main theme of the site....

dammit i just seem to get stupider as the forum continues ...ok ok so i was born two seconds ago!

but cmon HG- i could use my version of my dads infected toenail that has been made from scratch using for instance ZBRUSH by Pixtudio (by the way this is one heck of an illustration suite) and use it as a wall paper or use parts of it for use in skinning! but like i said i dont see anywere on this site stating that SPECIFIC ART STYLES OF ANY CALIBUR WILL BE REJECTED BECAUSE ITS NOT THE TYPE OF ART THAT THEY LOOK FOR!

ART IS ART and i dont know how many times i have to say this but art is universal. as far as making skins or whatever! your version of art appearently doesnt consist of oil painting/ pastell style pc rendereing stuff.. its funny how you and alot of other people have ideas that art has to be symetrical non organic looking, digital, high res or otherwise synthetic in texture ......i dont really know what IS your version of art but its not just a fractal/ gloss/ transparency /blurred world art is many styles including these but not subject to them or constrained to them! and as far as my ideas go,,,,,WC is an ok place to show any kind of art!

please tell me if i am wrong or stupid!.....i really got myself in deep with this post!

OK...you're 'wrong or stupid' .....just kidding...

Yes, skinning is an artform ...wallpapers can be also.  However, not everything that qualifies as graphic art [pictures] will necessarily be actually suitable as a wallpaper.

This can be purely functionality issue, not aesthetics.

If an image is extremely strident and/or busy it may be genuinely abhorrent as a functioning desktop environment....but stuck over a fireplace may be perused lovingly over a bottle of red.

Wallpapers have a functionality criteria, whereas 'pure' art just needs to cover a spot of plaster wall...
