First Great Skin

can you remember?

Can you remember the first skin that really blew you away and got you hooked on customization?

Mine was Thredz by Dangeruss and Thredz. That skin made it impossible to have vanilla Win ever again. When I look at it now, I am amazed at what a fine piece of work it was and still is!

How about you?

Three people got me hooked up and the skins came after that. My wife, clwoods, got me interested, starone is teaching me how to skin and skinalli (PluGGz) supplied the skin (Compromise) that I am still using. Richard Mohler is a great source of inspiration along with adni18.

I came to skinning via Litestep, because I saw a screenshot of a Litestep theme somewhere and just HAD to have it. After finding out what Litestep was, and installing it, I applied that theme, which was called "Rising Edges". I tweaked it for months and months and learned all about Litestep through doing that.

I think the first WB skin that really blew me away was Copperdeck, by the incomparable Treetog.

One of the first windowblinds that caught my eye and downloaded was ^^Gabriel's Glassteel https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=3387&LibID=1 . I loved the deep blue colors, and complemented with Chaninja's excellent SubZero icons https://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=1019&LibID=2 it made for a most-welcome and refreshing change from Luna.

Back in 99 when this all started for me I used my own skins most of the time but, it was essorants Seer and Dervish Blue that rated time on my desktop and Dageruss's Candy Blue that caught my attention....

Allen Bond's "Capsula" made me blink, BaT's "Shapeshifter" made me feel all warm inside, Shoggot's "Scathe" had me drooling but Square Designes' "Square One" made my jaw drop. Yeah, I guess I'm showing my "age" considering all these skins are from 1999, but back in those days creativity was in its prime and originality at its peak, these skins were so different and groundbreaking...but I guess you had to be there and have the benefit of hindisght sitting here 7 years later

I forgot Shoggot completely, looked it up and then remembered the skin. Thanks Jafo, your memeory banks are working much better than mine! Of course, that is true of most folks these days!

Mine was "Drop Plus" by Renzo Riccio.
I so wanted to be able to make my own cursors after using it.

When it comes to Cursor Xp, Hand. With Windowblinds, I don't have a specific one, mainly all the skins created by Pixtudio/Treetog.

Without a doubt Sputnik grabbed me and has never let go. At the time I found Sputnik I was using kewlpAd, which had no Sputnik skin. I could not wait for someone to make one, so I did it myself. Since then any skinnable app I try for more than a week or two I will try to port Sputnik to it.

It wasn't a skin by itself, but the software that allowed me to alter it myself to my desire. And that was WindowBlinds 1. However, I used only the trial until version 3 because I was back then running old crappy Win9x which would crash all to often with WB. (And I was alot younger and didn't have a creditcard.)
I've used Shell apps before that, but it was really WB that tugged me deeper into it. But the skin I think of when I think back is CopperDeck.

Toxic did it for me, it was so ahead of its time of course along w/ Thredz and Dangeruss' ones. Take a look

Not bad for a skin made in 2000

Project Onyx by SkinArtistry and Zion by WB Skinner were the 2 skins that got me hooked!
