WinCustomize: Total Melt Down
It was very...VERY close
Tuesday, October 25, 2005 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News
Yesterday we had a total melt down of one of the machines and the FULL master database on another machine. In short, everything was lost.
Luckily, we do daily back-ups. Had there been no backup, there'd be no more WinCustomize or forums or JoeUser. It was the most serious system failure we've ever had. The daily backups of course mean we lost everything that happened yesterday -- orders, posts, skins, you name it.
It's also another reason why WinCustomize subscriptions are so important. Thanks to subscribers, we have the extra hardware to do those backups. If we had even more subscribers, we could do real-time mirroring of these kinds of things and the melt down would not have even lost anything. But last night, the end of WinCustomize as we knew it came very close. Thank you subscribers for having provided the funds to have the extra hardware for us to be able to do daily backups and be able to quickly bring the site back.
In the meantime, you will find that there are weird errors as some indexes are wrong and that kind of thing. We'll be trying to address that in the coming days.

| Guess so. I got here by clicking on an article titled "Howard Dean: I am God", allegedly by Dr. Guy. |
Now I got to find it so I can repost it!

Most everything has been restored now. We lost article comments from yesterday. And anyone who created Stardock.net accounts yesterday will most likely need to re-create their account since I was not able to restore new accounts after 7:00 AM.
Also, all orders that were re-input to the system have had new serial numbers assigned to them. A new receipt has been sent to your accounts with your new registration information. So please use the new serial numbers in the email. We apologize for the inconvenience.

| Well now I feel very good. I just purchased WindowBlinds a few days ago. |
That's great, but purchasing WindowBlinds has nothing to do with becoming a WC subscriber.......... two totally different things.

| This is something like what happened to ModBlog Ever since their server meltdown for the images, it have become a sad place to be (at leat for those who were really used to the featured including having your own blog design). |
It just goes back to the Ross Perot Adage. "Back up twice, Melt once".
