First boot problems >_<

Hi everyone, it's been awhile hasn't it? Well, I'll just cut to the chase here so I can keep ripping my ever-balding head, mmkay? Today I burned myself a working ISO CD of Kubuntu, eager to try it out. The Live CD had worked great, and I was eager to get started with the real deal! Anyway, I install Kubuntu on my 80-gig external HDD (not wanting to risk repartitioning my C-drive), and it all goes smoothly. Packages unpack, install, etc. Anyway, it tells me to take out the CD, and reboot the system to finish installation. I do so, and boot into it (with GRUB of course), however I run into a problem, and it won't work now

Mid-process, it loads the modules, and a screen pops up saying, "ALERT! dev/mapper/Ubuntu-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell!"
I've tried everything I know to solve this, and google has yet to solve my woes, but won't anyone from the lovely community of WC help to solve my woes

Ever considered VMWare? Works just fantastic for things like this. Heck, I even try out the live CD's with it, AND...
SLAX has a method to install it on a Thumbdrive. Talk about convienient!! It boots from my lil ol 1GB SanDisk Cruizer and runs like a charm on any system that support booting from a usb device.

ummm....before you give up completely...
Kubuntu is just a KDE desktop on top of Ubuntu. Ubuntu normally installs with the Gnome desktop. That error sounds as though the install didn't properly install the Ubuntu portion.
Just a thought...Ubuntu is a great distribution of Linux...using it now. Try doing an ISO of Ubuntu, give it a run, see how you like it's Gnome desktop. You can use the Synaptic Package Manager to install the KDE desktop if you really want to.
