Has anyone done a review on replacement shells? I was wondering if there was a better shell other than the explorer.exe found with XP.

I'll go even one step further.....if you have tried other shell replacements, which one would you recomend and why?

Litestep, because it's the oldest and most enduring...and the sky's the limit when it comes to adaptability. It was originally a shell for Win 95 ....because 98 hadn't even been released then...

Seriously, I agree w/Jafo here. LS probably has the best track record, and you're more likely to find documentation and support for it than newer shells.
(Jafo, do you get conflicts with Object Dock under LS?)

Yup Litestep is very solid. But I think Aston is as well. Thought that isn't free, mind you. However I tried it a couple of years ago and I found it very interesting. However I was more compelled by DX and Objectbar even though they aren't really shells.
I know I have tried quite a few others, but I'm poor with names and that was two three years ago. I suppose I'll remember if I dropped by shellcity again and had a look.

my question is how stable are these replacements? I have (sometimes still do) use BB4WIN and it works relatively well.

The thing is I never used these shell replacements for long. But Litestep should be one of the most stable ones.

The stability of the two shell-replacements you are talking about is up to the authors. I'd go with litestep. With it you can do just about everything you'd want, if you know what you want. Works well.

I would think they would be compatible enough. As I understand shells, it still has to operate under the constratints of a windows environment(OS) so.. wb should work. I remember playing with WB and BB4WIN and it seem to work.

I think a nice shell replacement would be one that read my mind then did what I really wanted it to do... or was I thinking of my wife.. darn!
