Opera vs. FireFox redux

Tuesday, November 8, 2005 by Majic7 | Discussion: Internet

I,ve been using FireFox for a while for WC, mainly because of the downloading ease on FireFox vs. IE. Tried Opera when it became free a while back but there was some conflict with posting on forums. That seems to fixed now. I've been having a lot server to busy, slow loads when switching threads, and timed outs. Decided to give Opera another try today and what a difference. None of the above problems. I tried a couple of downloads and they seem to work just like FireFox. Defaults to whatever program is called for, only tried IP so far. Brad mentioned that 25% of people browsing WC use FireFox so this probably has something to do with the slowness I've been experiencing. Different paths maybe? I don't know much about how these things work but so far Opera has cleared a major irritation for me. On dial-up. One weird thing though, the main page for forums doesn't update at the rate FireFox does. Hit more on any of the sections and they are updated. Another edit, now FireFox is just as fast, maybe it was a time of day thing. I'll keep testing to see if there really is a difference.

sir bichur, just tried opera (encouraged by you all). i did end up with the login issue (i was trying to use my account data, and next thing you knew i was not logged in - even though i remembered just loging in & saving my account info). i went on trying to relog in, to no avail. finally, i selected to accept "direct" (not 3rd party) cookies and to be able to store loging info in cookies...
worked for me, hope that helps.

Miss iseekserendipity,

Try entering flashgot as a search on the Opera forums (if you haven't already): http://my.opera.com/community/forums/

Well, I'll be....

Thank You Miss Iseekserendipity! I came back to this post, and because of you - found what you seek

I am now posting this via Opera 8.5 - opted out of 9 since it recommended not using it to check mail. Now I'm curious as to whether I can set the size of the forum 'reply' section as it only wants to use 1/2 of the box.

Other than that - I'm a Happy Troll!

Now I gotta get the speel chicker and figger out how to get Smileys (like SmilelyXtra for FF) .

I say Opera is the better bowser, but I just like FireFox more. The extentions is just what I need (for Opera it just doesn't seem right) and just seems to smooth.

Opera has the smaler footprint and is really a good choice for a browser. Maybe if I had Opera first... naaa I still would like FireFox more. I really don't know why.

Since originally posting this I've switched to Firefox 1.5 and Opera Beta 9. I'm on dial-up so I notice load times, especially on WinCustomize. I tend to spend more time here than anywhere else. I haven't gone all retentive and timed anything but Firefox does seem to load faster, usually. There are times when it seems to take forever or I get some sort of error, page not found, no comments to display at this time, etc. When this is happening on Firefox, Opera nearly always seems to work right. It's not happening as much lately, may be due to the odd hours I keep because of my job. 7:00PM to 4:00AM shift. Opera does seem more stable but I use Firefox until it irritates me, use Opera for a while then sometimes return to Firefox. I do like the extensions.

I'm not really sure what all the buzz is about with tabbed browsing. You either have a bunch of tabs, or you have a bunch of tasks in the taskbar. What's the difference? With a little tweaking I've been able to surf with 20+ windows open in IE. AND a download or five.

I guess I am not willing to throw myself into learning the ins and outs of FF or Opera. I have them installed, but don't use them often. Can't use them for any site that I need to log in to. Extensions are just more bells and whistles that I haven't found a need for.

You have got to be kidding me.
20 IE windows open at once? If I had Object Bar running I might do that just to keep all the browser windows in some sort of order (love me some Object Bar) but for me, there is a big difference in having 20 tabs open in one window than having 20 windows.

Since I find myself to be a web developer, I use both IE and FF and switch when I need to. There are only a few sites I go to that FF doesn't like (for example MSNBC and my school's online web site interface).
