Found this over at Neowin...People slavering to get Apple's "impossibly small" iPod Nano into their sticky hands may want to pause a moment: those ahead of them in the queue have discovered that it's also unbelievably easy to scratch the screen, nixing its photo-displaying abilities. Apple's discussion forums are already host to a 188-post thread on the topic, where people have spotted that the plastic used for the screen and front of the product is as sensitive as a Kate Moss sponsor.
Trouble is that a few scratches will quickly make the color screen all but useless for viewing album art and photos stored on the machine. In which case you might as well have bought the cheaper, screen less iPod shuffle, hmm? When the point was put to the head of Apple's iPod division, Jon Rubenstein - who in the past oversaw the development of the Titanium PowerBook - the one that killed off Wi-Fi reception, because metal cages do that - he replied: "Nah, you don't really think that? It's made of the hardest polycarbonate... You keep it in a pocket with your keys?"

I still have an original black and white gameboy from the first week it debuted in America (and how many years ago was that? *ahem*)... there's nary a mark on the screen, lol.

Those comments from the Apple dude are way out of line if you ask me (if you read the whole story)
Just like that Sony guy, Kataragi or whoever, defending the defective PSP units that got shipped all over the place.
This isn't a freaking porcelain statue that we place in a glass case on the wall to admire.
It needs to be built to withstand the tortures of cotton pants LOL.
I understand if it gets dropped or scraped on hard surfaces... that will scratch a lot of things, but this sounds rediculous and Apple need to admit their part in this. Learn from George Bush's mistakes!

If you put it with in a pocket with keys you might as well intentionally mar it with a knife. Thats true with any of the ipods or any screen. If you're not going to take any better care of a 200+ dollar investment than to grind rigid metal against it there's no use in complaining. But I don't know a single person that doesn't have scratches on any ipod other than the mini which didn't have a glossy shine to begin with. No one seems to be posting pictures to back up the claims either, but when repeat ipod customers complain; when they were happy with the previous ones, it makes you wonder.
But in general, people need to have the common sense to take care of any of them. IF cloth can actually scratch it that's one thing, but keys will scratch any screen, or nearly anything else, why do you think people "key" cars?

This little episode reminds me of a little known flaw in Apple's original iPod where the battery replacment costs as much as the iPod (or it might as well had).

My nano has just done a holiday trip and also has been used in my commute to work everyday since it's release... I just keep it in my jeans pocket and it hasn't got a scratch on it. I don't exactly baby the thing either.
Just got an iPod sock for it (out of stock of everything else) and it's working very well for it.

whew...just read the whole thing. Seems that there might have been some nanos manufactured with an inferior plastic. There are a lot of stories from nano owners who have had no scratches at all, as with Septimus' experience.
Perhaps, in the name of customer relations, Apple should do a recall on that batch...if that's even possible. ?

a shame to have to suffer problems from certain 'batches'.. don't they buy all their materials from the same place? makes you wonder about all those LCD, trackpad, and harddrive problems that 'only select people' seem to have.
I've heard the nano is (except for the screen) nearly indestructable.. thrown up in the air to land on concrete, backed over by a car, etc.. and its kept on ticking. so remember that you want to treasure the thing, keep it safe, in a case or something.. but its supposively very durable otherwise.

I'm not surprised by this at all. Apple is a very "greedy" company when it comes to music and specificly their iPods. They are more than happy to take plenty of your money at first and then if something goes wrong, oops? they don't cover it, and if they do, they will take their time shipping you a new one. If they don't cover it, they will be glad to take more of your money to give you another one that will most likely break of the same problem or a new one, these iPods these days have so many other problems if its not the battery, and it will prolly break within the year, but conveniently after they extended warrenty expires. I've wasted $900 dealing with Apple over a 15GB 3Gen iPod. My advice to everyone is not to buy an iPod unless it's a shuffle, as you will regret it soon enough.

Polycarb eyeglass lenses are tough in terms of impact, but they scratch easily & get pitted if cleaned with ammonia-containing cleaners like Windex. It's possible that there are better polymers now, I guess...

Anyone who is going to pay for an iPod nano can surely afford the covers the will surely be released in the next month or so. I don't think it matter what a screen like that is made of, eventually it will get trashed, I have plenty of cell phone to attest to that.

I looked at the nano and decided to get a Zvue player. it not only runs most media formats {wma,MP3,avi,etc} it also shows pictures,album art,movies, you can even read text, copy a book to it and read it as you go....
cool part is i can take my SD card out of my digital camera and look at the pictures long before I get home, then swap out to another card and watch a movie on it while the wife runs in to a store for 'just a sec'
