Windows Vista: Will it be good or bad?

Well to see things in perspective. Microsoft made her first really impressive appearence in Operating Systems with Windows 95,which was a pretty stable and well designed OS in its own time. Some say it was the most stable ever OS, by others it was characterized as a radical evolution in the world of PCs. Since then Microsoft has launched a series of OSs into the market. Some where good and found a grandiose appeal amongst PC users (Win 98),some of them have not been so good (Win Me,Win NT) and some of them are still being fixed (Win XP). If we see things in timeline perspective it took three years for Win 98 to be developed into a functional well-organized system,whilst the rest not so good OSs where made into less than two years time distance between them. Now MS is in the labs again working on a whole new OS,Windows Vista (leaving Longhorn in the shelf for another couple of years). What do you think about it? Will Vista be the next generations reavolution? The evolution to a revolution as promised? Or just another OS amongst the others?

Another interesting is whether Vista will be good for the skinning world?

Any opinions?

First off, characterizing Win95 as the most stable OS ever is quite an overstatement. It was a definite improvement over 3.1 but it wasn't until XP that I felt MS finally got things mostly right.
I like most of what Vista is going to be and I think its mostly a step in the right direction. I am looking forward to it.
I think also it will be a great addition to skinning.

Longhorn IS Vista. MS renemed Longhorn to Vista a few months ago.

As far as Vista I hope it will be more secure than XP - no viruses or spyware thank you.

Cyberworld, unless I havent been paying attention..I hate to say it, But I think Kona is correct..Vista is Longhorn renamed..

Ghos- You must admit, Win95 was *At the time* the most stable OS around,,I think thats what he meant..*At the time*

Kona..LoL..if you dont want Spyware, Virii, Spam, OS Glitches etc..etc.. get rid of your PC because they all are here to stay..as Hippy more or less pointed out..LoL!

I think Vista is gonna ROCK! Cyberworld.. I like everything I have read so far about the OS and personally cant wait for a final public release!..

Given the feedback Brad is so kindly providing us from PDC 2005, Vista is shaping up to be the most progressive and innovative OS's ever released by MS. The reports to date suggest that positive things are happening with Vista and I'm looking forward to its public release with the greatest anticipation.

Will Vista be good for skinning, well yes I think so....MS has taken the technology of XP by the scruff of the neck and added even more to give the user even more scope.

I think Vista will be very good. I'm also very excited about what I hear about Vista realkted to skinning and gadgets.

As for Win95 being the most stable OS at that time, I found Win3.1 more stable. Rarely ever crashed.

Actually i read that Vista took the place of Longhorn,whilst Longhorn still remains in the projects,but it has been moved to some years later,maybe in 2008 they'll release Windows Lognhorn.

There is also the Blackcomb project by MS,which has also been moved to a later time alongside with Win Longhorn.

I also heard they are reverse engineering a captured UFO, and that will be released sometime with Longhorn also.

Longhorn was the code-name for what became Windows Vista.  They are the same product.

Windows 95 was not stable, not by a long shot.  Windows NT 4.0 (1996) was, IMO, the first decent Microsoft OS.

Why do you think that?  Gadgets are gadgets are gadgets.  DesktopX Pro will be one way of creating those gadgets.

Which do you really think most users are going to want to do?

a) Buy the Expression Suite ($499) + Visual Studio 2005 ($1999) in order to make gadgets.

or

Buy DesktopX Pro ($69.95) which includes a lot of templates and content to make gadget creation easy to make those same gadgets?

You are right Frogboy,only the magazine i read writes that Longhorn has been postponed.All others say that Vista IS Longhorn. My fault i guess...man is sooo difficult to find a decent PC Magazine in Greek.

Been doing a lil googling...results from Wiki:

Windows Vista, abbreviated WinVI, is Microsoft's next version of its Windows operating system, succeeding to Windows XP. It was previously known by its codename Longhorn (for a full list, see Microsoft codenames); the name "Vista" was unveiled on July 22, 2005. Longhorn Server, the successor of Windows Server 2003, is yet to be named. Windows Vista will carry the version number 6.0 (Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 being Windows NT versions 5.0, 5.1 and 5.2, respectively).

I must agree that DX is probably the easiest and most economic way for a user to make gadgets until now. But in the near future i'm not certain as to what will happen. Isn't Microsoft trying to built a site about gadgets? Link
