RAR vs. Winzip

Hi all,
I found a rainmeter that I liked, and tried to download it...discovered it is a RAR file, not winzip. I only have winzip. Is there anyway I could change the extension to winzip? Barring that, does anyone know if there is a winzip version of it? The rainmeter in question is SJOGRO Rocks.

It's free? Unless my eyes decieve me, I see a trial version which expires after the trial is over, but not a free version.

I had downloaded RAR about a year ago, and after the 30 days it stopped functioning. However, I just downloaded it again, and it's allowing me to have another trial version. Hmmm... Beats the heck out of me!?!

I prefer TUGZip for my RAR files. Also free and handles many, many file types. Sorry, no link on me, but easy enough to find.

Try FreeCommander. It's an Explorer replacement that has built in zip, rar and several other compression methods. Plus dual Pane support, file sync. etc. Pretty good for Freeware.

Thanks, for all your suggestions. I remember downloading it a year or so ago, and it wanted to take control over all of my compressed files! Hoepfully, it won't this time.

When you install, you should get a window asking what file types you want to associate with WinRAR. Select the ones you want associated, or de-select the ones you don't want it to handle, depending on how it's set up.
If for some reason you don't get that window, you can set you file associations by going to Start Menu>Control Panel>Folder Options select the File Types tab, them you can change your file associations to suit you.

Anybody know if Objectzip does rar files? If so, and if you have an Object Desktop subscription, you could just download it from SDC.

7Zip seems cool. I didn't want too many features though so i don't know if its the best. I just wanted to open a tar file.

My 2cents: try Quickzip, it's free & has been around awhile. Support for a wide range of formats and good shell integration.

7-zip has a great commandline (for those that do serious things) and supports lots of formats. WinRar has one distinct advantage over it still: the ability to check the integrity multiple archives at once. Both are power user things, so for the average bloke, it shouldn't really matter what you use.

It would be great if ObjectZip was just made to handle all these different compression formats...then we wouldn't have to be getting all these different programs. Thats one feature I would love to see...I've downloaded files before that were of different compression formats but I really don't want numerous programs that I might only use once in awhile...to much clutter.

Just get PowerArchiver.... It's the most complete compression utlitiy I've found and uncompresses just about anything. Um duh? lol
