On the bottom left on the home page of WinCustomize.com there is a poll being taken. If you're a registered user of WinCustomize.com, please tell us what you think of the name, Windows Vista. Windows Vista is the name Microsoft has given to its next version of Windows (previously called Longhorn).

2. An awareness of a range of time, events, or subjects; a broad mental view: “the deep and sweeping vistas these pioneering critics opened up” (Arthur C. Danto).
You can go two ways on this, in my eyes...the positive, which is interesting, is making a play on the word 'windows'. THat boring old window is now a 'vista' to newer and better things, affording a new view.
The negative is that you can say Vista means 'looking at future goals', where as they should be saying the future is 'here' 'now'. Being a pessimist my first thought when i heard the word 'vista' was the latter.. that the new OS isn't going to break much new ground.
Overall however, i think the name is neutrol and boring. Think of it like a car. You want to buy a car with a hot name like 'cheeta' or *cough* 'tiger' or 'panther'. XP was neat. But 'vista'. I dunno. i can't imagine the design being very interesting, nor the marketing strategy. Longhorn, as a codename, and even when XP was Whistler were interesting names that made you think of different things. I just think they could have done more with it. Hell.. even call it 'aero' for 'light and fluffy'.

I personally think it should've been called Windows XP2, because XP was the best name so far, and people go silly for sequels..

Sorry, I keep getting thoughts after I hit "submit". What about "Microsoft's Super-Duper Operating System" Or Windows SDOS? Or they could get direct and call it "Windows Orange"... ooooh, wouldn't that piss off Apple? OK, I'm done.

First, I think the claims that there's some connection with VISA is insane. It's purely coincidence..
As for the name.. It's interesting. It's not normal for software, I'm used to version numbers or letters or whatever. This sort of makes it feel less like a peice of software and more like an actual "product", which kind of makes sense..

It makes me think of Dodge Colt Vista. It has no teeth, like Cougar, Tiger, Panther ...

Exactly what I was thinking.
Maybe Bill and the boys went our for coffee this morning, you know, to toss around ideas for names for the latest and greatest Windows OS, and Bill pulled out his Visa to pay, and......
(Sounds of coffee shop in the background) Steve Ballmer and various MS flunkies are comparing golf scores, telling Linux and Mac jokes, and generally avoiding the dreaded topic of coming up with a new name. (It was going to be "Windows 360" but the Xbox boys snagged that one before the OS guys ever had a chance) Somewhat detached from the rest, The Chief Software Architect is lost in thought. ("Hmmmm, if Linus can have an OS named after himself, why not me? " he muses. "Bill-ix?, Gat-ix, maybe.....hmmmm")
At this point the waitress brings the check. BIll pulls out his wallet, pulls out his Visa card (branded with the Windows logo of course) and suddenly he has it!!
"Windows Visa" Bill proclaims out loud.
COnversation stops at the table, for the great King of Earth and OS's has spoken. All look at Bill.
"The market name for Longhorn, we'll call it Windows Visa!"
A brave, but nervous MS flunky, humbly and discreetly points out that, while it is the best idea he has ever heard, the Visa name is already licensed.
All fall silent again. Bill looks at his card and rubs his chin and thinks.
"Hmmmm, Vis...o, no that won't work. Vis...ex? No, that won't do either"
Bill looks out the window (window, get it?) at the beautiful view. A virtual panorama of beauty, a...a...a VISTA!!!
"Vista, we'll call it Vista!" Bill proclaims.
"I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it" yells Ballmer (Think of his developer speech a while back)
Everyone else quickly agrees. King Bill has done it again, they all agree.
Three cheers for Bill, three cheers for VISTA!! Everyone will love it!
They all rush out of the restaurant to get back to the offices and tell the world of the wonderful news.
Of course, in all the excitement, the waitress never did get paid.

I'm one of the few here who like the name VISTA.....alot better than Longhorn which I never liked!! Hope they work out most of the problems & it's a WINNER!!

It should have been well known Longhorn was just a code name in the same way Whistler was the codename for XP

I like vista, good name, fresh view hopefully.

With XP, I finally got used to (and came to like) the somewhat cryptic two-letter OS names that began with "NT". Now Microsoft takes a new tack and adopts a name that sounds like the Vista Cruiser on That 70's Show. That's right, it sounds like an old car ... and many other things like VISTA, Volunteers in Service to America at http://www.friendsofvista.org/
If we're lucky, maybe VISTA will sue MS for illegal use of its name!
I do think that "Vista" implies that MS hopes the user will be looking forward to the NEXT Windows release even as he picks a shrink-wrapped copy of Vista off the retail shelf.

Personally, I never understood why they went away from version numbers and hid them behind either years or goofy names. Oh, wait, yes I do - it's so they could charge for a minor revision! (95-->98-->98SE-->Me all windows 4.x), (2000-->XP-->2003 all windows 5.x).
