Hi, I wen't to download a gif off a web page and noticed that the only save as option I have is bmp. I cannot save as is in gif,jpg or any other format but bmp anymore. Anyone have any ideas. I use to be able to choose my format. Not anymore. Something has happened.

Often happens when IE's cache is 'full'....go to options and empty cache files...

Hi Jafo, That did't work. I keep my cache clean on a regular basis, but I cleaned it again and no luck.

IE's options ain't the best at doing it...I usually manually delete the files and their generated folders....once every week or so...

I use Zonealarm Pro to do it. I looked in my cache file and there is nothing there. I think I looked in the right place. Windows and then cache folder? Could it be a setting that got changed somewhere in one of my programs?

A Good Way To Get In To The Cache Folder Is To Go To :
Tools > Internet Options
On The General Tab Click On Settings > View Files
That Will Open An Explorer Window Right In Your Cache Folder.
Ctrl + A And Then Shift + Delete To Delete Everything.

Cheers.

Thank's WowFactor, but that did not do it either. I have something wrong I fear. A changed setting or something. I don't have any bugs or anything. I have run all my scans so, I am stumped and frustrated. The only thing about this I found on the MS web site related to a compression problem caused by AOL. I do not have AOL!

With some system config. that's all it will allow you to do...save it to your HD and right click 'edit' and convert it to anything you want.

I am very thankful for your help yrag, but I am not that familiar with system congigurations. I do not know how to do what you are talking about. I know how to get to the sytem config., but from there I have'nt got a clue.

You can't change it...download the .bmp to your hard drive as a .bmp and then right click it and click edit (or open MS Paint and point to downloaded file). Either way, when 'Paint' comes up, click on 'File/Save as'......

That will work great for a jpg file, but will it work with an animated gif. I still don't know why I use to have all the save as options, but don't anymore. It is a mystery! Thanks for the help.

It will work with any. There's different 'guesses' why this happens (it been going on for years and MS has never really addressed it), but my personal opinion is that it all depends how the image's net addy is listed. That's why sometimes you can and other times you can't. Who knows..

I've run across this before in cases where it was a misconfigured web server. If mime-types aren't set correctly on the server, it doesn't deliver the file as the correct type. In those cases, there is nothing you can do except convert the file as yrag suggested.

Ya know what pic...I have Microangelo and never noticed any change, but in trying animated gifs without it, it appears that the last IE update (probably January's) changed it. You can change the ext before downloading it in the name file box by adding the ext you want, but it mis-configures the pixel size and changes the frame rate to 1. If you try it in another browser (or you don't have the updates installed), it works.

MS finally addresses it by taking the option away...grrrr

clwoods actually you sound like one of your downloaded program files is corrupt. Go to Tools then internet options and then click on cache settings when that window opens click on view objects this will open another window with a list of downloaded program files. Look for any that says corrupt or something similar (anything other than installed means it's not working correctly) delete those files and restart your IE. Should work fine now.

Wow! You all are great. Thankyou Jafo, WowFactor, yrag, pictoratus, and Red Buzzard. Now that yrag mentioned the new updates, I believe that is what has done it. I looked in my downloaded files folder as Red Buzzard suggested, and there are no corrupt files. There are, however two files that are unknown. Also my anti virus scan indicates my shell32.dll is changed. It is not a bug or anything, just changed. Hmm. I hate it when stuff starts doing this kid of .... I guess I will just have to learn to live without being able to download animated gifs, and convert bmp's to jpg in paint. All I can say is MS better get their act together. I tried using Firefox, but too many of the webpages I need to access will not work with it. I had to remove it. Again thankyou all for your help. Maybe this will get straightened out, but I won't hold my breath!

Red Buzzard, One more thing. Should I get rid of the 2 entries that are listed as unknown?
