Thursday, January 20, 2005 by BX | Discussion: WinCustomize Site Issues

Hi folks!!!!
Just found another bug. Check your Profiles for "USER LEVEL" Access. If have checked mine, jafo's, and Joe's (joeKnowledge). All of them are showing that they are on an "UNKNOWN" User Level.

Jafo I am still unable to rate skins and if it's true that I should be allowed to under these confusing rules (in which one set says you must be Journeyman or higher to have access to the ratings, and now you're saying that's not the case), then am I the victim of some kind of bug once again on the site? My rating ability has disappeared since before my first post in this thread. I am most definitely registered with Stardock.com, my accounts are cross-referenced and I am a current customer. So, according to what you just said above, I should have access to the ratings, correct? Or am I just missing something? This is really confusing and I did read every blessed word of the "About Site" page too. Just tell me who to talk to if it's a bug in the site or if my ratings privilege was revoked because I gave out only high ratings and if I didn't like it I didn't vote. And Bichur... if you get yourself exiled then you'll only be able to download skins with the highest ratings and well... my whole point I think in number #33 aside from sounding like a politician, is that, in my opinion, a lot of the best skins on this site are given low ratings for one reason or another. So exiles may miss out on the best skins out there simply because they have a rating of 6 or lower, and that compilation of ratings may be solely based on a matter of taste, preference, and color... not skin quality. For example, I notice people aren't real fans of pink and purple around here but some of the best skins I've come across happen to be those colors. I know I'm becoming a nagging pain around here over this issue, but the rules need to be clearer, especially regarding what perks come with what customer level, because I've been running in circles reading and rereading things on this site and on Stardock.com, and they conflict with one another so I don't know what's what anymore.

Citizen Angel Destiny 05  ...yes it is a little 'confusing' at the moment, particularly with the new site change-over....where customers [some] seem to be unable to vote and others can... and the stranger situation where some people became Journeymen, etc when that definitely was not the case ... just as at the beginning of this thread reference was made to odd 'levels' even for admins.

But...all this is essentially down to those evil critters called 'bugs' which, if everyone remains patient will be resolved.

The world does not end tomorrow if the rating 'issue' is not sorted today.  There are several anomalies that are in the throes of being worked on, some of which take more time than others.

I'd suggest a little patience, as you can always apply any ratings you feel are being missed later when access is restored correctly....

As for rating methodology, for those new to Wincustomize.com....they are necessary...and have been the subject of 'more than one' debate, where the current system is that which works best.

That is not to say it might not change in the future, but any debate here and now won't change the current oddities where some can and some cannot post ratings.

"a lot of the best skins on this site are given low ratings for one reason or another." ... No, ideally those who CAN rate do so with honesty and maturity...after reasonable evaluation of that which they are rating.  The resultant outcome is an average of those [weighted towards the opinions of the experienced skinners/members] and reflects public opinion of that work.

If and when anomalies are brought to our notice...where there 'may' be some vindictive attack, etc it's checked for veracity and dealt with.

Personally I'd like to see more accountability for those who engage in what we call 'drive-by' ratings...where they have no understanding of the program/skin as they never use it but still rate them.  Revokation of privileges sounds good....temporary or otherwise.

I agree entirely. There is always a small minority who indulge in irresponsible acts at the expense of everyone else. They do not deserve to have privileges.

~Well, I read all the posts but I'm still unsure about the rating thing because only one other person seems to have the same problem that I have..i'm also a Stardock customer level 4 and my account is cross referenced..but the only way I can rate a skin or SS is:(The following was what I wrote in Article section, I was unsure where to ask this question)

***In order for me to rate a skin/screenshot etc..the rating stars are not able to be clicked on ,they are just solid stars, no mouseover is visible..for me to rate a skin I have to click on the author/user name, then if they have a wincustomize site, if I open that window, then all their skins have a visible rating area and i can click on the stars and get a " done " message. I asked other and they don't have to open 3 pages to rate a skin. I've already incorporated my Stardock account with Wincustomize long ago and its the same email address. If they do not have a wincustomize site, I cant rate anything..although most of the skinners do have one..

Patience? The bugs have been going since the wonderous launch of the new site.

My account has been stripped down to something so low I can't even see the access level!

I only get 5 skins per page, at the miniscule thumbnail size. Do you have any idea what those non-"enhanced" thumnails look like at 1200x1600?
