"User Level" Bug

Thursday, January 20, 2005 by BX | Discussion: WinCustomize Site Issues

Hi folks!!!!
Just found another bug. Check your Profiles for "USER LEVEL" Access. If have checked mine, jafo's, and Joe's (joeKnowledge). All of them are showing that they are on an "UNKNOWN" User Level.

I'm not at all worried about this...just curious as to what my level/access actually is so I know what I can and can't do.

I realize this is an "older" forum post but I hate starting new topics when one already exists. I am actually very upset about this whole issue. I am a current customer of 4 and should thus be a Journeyman (I've been reduced to Citizen status once again and unable to rate), but even when I was Journeyman I still could not change my title from "Citizen" to something customized, and I could not make my personal icon show up in my profile. Can someone please give me an update on this issue? Current customer 4 means I spent some big bucks, guys, and I'd like to reap the benefits of the site since I do not use Joeuser or some of the other perks. Thanks in advance.

I will second that motion Angel. I have the exact same problem....and it's been going on since my post up there^^^^. I was actually told in an email from support that I was "probably" demoted due to some lousy "joke" skins I put out. They've been removed for over a month now, and still nothing.

Angel, I'm a customer 5 and have always been a citizen, don't really expect anything else, I bought ObjectDock and a subscription here, luv the programs and this place, enjoy making screenshots and showing off the talents of others, and I'm making a few friends and learning how to start skinning a few things....Don't really know what's required to move past citizen or really care, I'm just having a great time and puttin' my 2 cents of nonsense in here and there

Citizen Angel Destiny 05  checking your profile....You are a Citizen, Access-class 1 and a User Level of 4 [Currentcustomer].

These are correct.  If you were a Journeyman then that is likely to be an error of coding, since corrected.  No-one is likely to have advanced to 'Journeyman' level since joining only 8 weeks ago.  Those Access levels are bestowed manually by Admins/Wizops as an indicator of their contribution to the skinning community...

Angel Destiny 05,

You might be confusing the Access Level vs. User Level. They are not the same thing and this can be checked by viewing your profile. For information about "User Level", check this page https://www.wincustomize.com/AboutSite.aspx If your Access Level = Current Customer, then you should be able to comment and rate.

Hope this clears up the confusion for you.

I see, so spending money, downloading over 50 MB of software from WinCustomize and continually giving high ratings, praise, referrals, and support doesn't qualify me to have a higher access level? Not to mention contributing my material to the library? What do I need to do, turn into Mother Theresa and become a stockholder of Stardock? I had no idea the access levels were determined this way. I thought they were done in a default manner. Yes I have made a few nice friends and enjoyed the WinCustomize experience greatly but if there is going to be a petty pecking order that determines whether or not I am fit to rate the work of others, I want no part of it. I'll go back to Ezthemes and deal with the spyware that accompanies the downloads. How utterly insulting and depressing, to know that this site determines a person's worth by its own subjective criteria. Looks like you just lost a customer. Farewell all.

Citizen Angel Destiny 05  the levels of 'promotion' are not a petty pecking order, nor are they 'done in a default manner'.  It's a simple cause and effect.  There are degrees of community input within the skinning environment which determine when and if a person's level is upgraded/revised.

Wincustomize.com's 'charter' is that most people interacting with the site will generaly be at the same level as yourself....but with time, contribution, and dedication to the skinning community [either here or on 'sister' sites] that contribution in a societal sense can be rewarded as well....not just the benefits gained from product purchase, etc.

It's also important to note that Wincustomize.com is not entirely married to Stardock the company, so although Stardock product purchases help the parent company they do not directly relate to Wincustomize, though benefits are granted to Stardock customers through DL limit removal, etc.

Stardock does, however, shoulder the vast majority of the running expenses and provide the coding expertise, etc. for WC.

If your leaving is due to a mis-understanding of what is entailed in becoming a Journeyman, etc then that is unfortunate, however those who have achieved that level of access would be understandably disheartened by others attaining that hard-earned level of respect/contribution through a coding glitch.

angel dont give up.. a journeyman is a postion of honor and respect .. those guys who have aquired that title have put in years of dedication to get recognized .... ive been here 3 years....and im not up to a journeyman yet .... it just takes time and dedication

It takes a little more time, patience and effort to be rewarded. I was here on the messageboard two years, had 100,000 downloads from my library, and was in the top ten skinners list for weeks before I got beyond citizen. Rewards always come to those who wait. See how patience and dedication to WC paid off for me.

Stick in there, this is a great place to be

I appreciate the support and I'm not saying I want to be one of the higher people. I think that us Citizens who comprise 99% of WinCustomize's population, if we're active members in good standing, should be allowed to rate the skins. If only Journeymen and up are permitted to rate the submissions of us lowly Citizens, then those ratings are biased because they represent only 1% of the WinCustomize population. I have seen where low ratings have discouraged new skinners like myself from even attempting to post a submission. It's like going in front of a panel of American Idol judges... some are like Paula but we also seem to have some very critical Simons out there... critical probably because they have vast talents and forget what it was like to be an amateur so they're rating things in comparison to their fellow Journeymen and buddies who always get the high ratings. There are some extremely talented Citizens out there who get dozens of positive comments and a plethora of downloads, but their ratings do not accurately reflect their hard work and this is what has disheartened me. Two days ago, I was able to contribute to my fellow Citizens and actually make a difference in their skinning experience by posting a rating; when I submitted my material it went right through because of my supposed access level and that made me feel like I was contributing something important. But now I learn that that access level was just a bug in the system and I am not allowed to rate the skins or have auto-submissions, which means in all likelihood that, were they to have to be decided by some committee, they would have been rejected. When I read by my favorite skinners that their wallpapers were rejected that really depresses me. We're supposed to be a team here, but it feels more like a dictatorship in which only the top 1% have any say in what goes on. Well perhaps it was a blessing in disguise that the bug occurred, for my amateur submissions did make it into the pool, and perhaps that will change the thoughts of the powers that be, seeing that even an amateur's work can receive nice comments and lots of downloads which = customer and product support.

I move that all Citizens, who are active Stardock customers in good standing (i.e., no flaming comments against another skinner), be allowed to rate the skins. In other words, I move that us 99%ers... the People, be allowed to vote for our favorites. We can make a difference where our favorite amateurs are concerned if awarded this privilege. Without it, we're reduced to a peasantry with no basic rights.

Change the rules. Let this site become a true democracy for your 99% majority of Citizens... this site's backbone and whole reason for existence.

Angel, I've been hanging around here for a couple of years now and when I first got into this place, I was able to rate and then somewhere along the line, I couldn't......maybe a glitch....I donno? It would be nice to make that contribution again when I can afford to subscribe. I will bide my time(as Fuzzy said)and wait for a promotion......maybe...oneday. Anyone who is promoted at this site, truly deserves that recognition for their works

Last time I noticed, SD customers CAN rate works on Wincustomize.com ....which tallies with carolelee's recent inability as she's currently listed as a 'past customer' which is either indicative of an expired subscription or a lost account cross-reference.

This being the case, much of #33 is moot....

I've been a current customer since last May or so (can't remember exactly) and I can't rate skins. I'm using the same email for both here and on stardock, so the cross-check page said I didn't need to cross-reference my accounts.

I'm a citizen 1 - subscriber 5 - I download stuff, read stuff, sometimes comment on stuff, don't upload stuff (still waiting for the talent gene to kick in) - haven't seen any indication I can't rate anything yet... maybe my clicker broke and I don't know it.

all this talk caused me to peruse again the link from #28 above which got me to wondering... how come exiles are only allowed to download the good stuff?

Good question. If someone has been banned, why are they allowed to download anything at all, especially the top-notch stuff? Defeats the purpose to me.

Their 'exiling' is usually due to some inappropriate act/ion on their part, yet they may still be SD customers and would still have a 'right' to some 'content'.

The 'exiling' prevents them from commenting/interacting with the site and therefore stops them from upsetting its good citizens...
