NEW SECTIONS!

They're here! They're here!

Monday, January 3, 2005 by Frogboy | Discussion: WinCustomize News

We have 3 new sections here!

First we have Screen Savers. People have long requested screen savers on WinCustomize.com. It's one of the most common things people like to add to their desktops. So here we have them.  But we need your help: If you like screen savers, find out who makes some of your favorites and let them know about WinCustomize.com.  Let them know WinCustomize.com gets over half a million visitors PER DAY and has an Alexa ranking around the top 5,000 worldwide. That should convince them that it's worth their time to upload their screen savers here.

Secondly, we have finally added Misc. Icons.  People have requested this for a long time. Not to be confused with the IconPackager section, this is a section where people can submit and find individual icons they may have or icons for various programs. We'll be adding many sub-sections for this in the coming days.

And lastly, Firefox skins. I'm not yet sure how popular these really are.  This could be a good way for Firefox to get some customization attention so if you have friends who make Firefox skins, please, let them know about the new section.

Hope you like them!

Most ObjectDock items are .PNG not .ICO.

Thanks for explaining I'll now stop asking for the separation of ObjectDock Icons from the rest of the ObjectDock Library.

Still don't know about the screensaver section. I thought Stardock was going to make a screensaver program so we wouldn't have to worry about spyware, adware, virii, trojon horses and other such computer sexual deseases.

Anyway, good looking out on Firefox and individual icons. I should upload some soon!

I'm going to have to agree with other people here and ask why we need a Screen Saver section? All it would take is one little piece of spyware/adware/viri to show WC that it is a bad idea. Pretty soon WC *might* not be spyware safe at all.

Besides who needs a Screen Saver these days? I fail to see the logic behind waiting for the computer to be idle for X number of minutes just to watch a little program.

IMHO, the Screen Saver really completes the look. I don't think anyone stands around to watch it for entertainment in the same right as BootSkins, etc. Now to my knowledge, EVERY Screen Saver is going to be tested by the mods before put out to make sure the .exe doesn't include that kind of stuff.

Well I don't use Screensavers - no offense to those who do. I have Windows setup to turn the whole monitor off after 5 minutes of no use. Uses less energy that way AND the monitor lasts a bit longer FWIW.

Still think the section is a bad idea.

Some information, if the screensavers get virus checked before made available here would be nice.

I dunno. So far, XXSvgSaver is only truly skinnable screensaver. Skinnable as in you customize anything that goes on in the screensaver. Hell, you could make a game for this screensaver, as long as it don't include any keyboard key-presses.

Well, kona0197...I think screen savers are a great idea! Especially since I've seen first hand how messed up a screen can get over time without one (let me know and I'll show you pics of 2 really messed up screens)....Mine's set to come up after 3 min, but I can say that I've never just sat and waited for it to come on just to look at the images.

You have your monitor set to go off after only 5 min?...Well, that's great if it works for you, but I doubt most people do...And considering that turning the monitors on and off over and over can REALLY damage it (this I've seen first hand too) I'll just stick to using a saver...but you don't want to use them then don't download them...that's easy..and the section is already here so why complain?

And for those worried about getting anything with a screen saver download, that's just part of downloading screen savers...And to be honest, as we all know the Mods here don't check every file uploaded for "crap", so you'd have as much chance of catching something from any of it....I'll admit that it really bites that there is so much "stuff" included with any free screen saver you download from anywhere on the net, but it sounds like these guys aren't going to allow that so I bet the screen saver section will be the safest section here now! WHOO HOO, finally, a safe place to download screen savers! And I mean that. I bought the screen saver maker because I was tired of getting all that other stuff...

I've never used Trillian and have no plans to, but if they are going to add that, then perhaps MSN, Yahoo...and all the rest should be added too...the other's user numbers are higher than Trillian...and there’s a million other things that can be skinned and that should be here...well, not that I care to see any other skin types here...but I try to remember that these guys are providing a HUGE service, by allowing people to upload and download things for free...and so I'll just say thanks and sit back and see what else they add...or don't add, but either way, I'm just happy to have a place to get skins!

I agree! I think the OD section should just be for Dock themes and not single icons.

Well, if there is going to be a section for IM, then why not have a section for all of them?

But anyway, back to the screensavers, the idea is that you can download something bad because they are executables. Its a little harder to get something viral in a wba format or a obskin format.

Madam TN Brat! - acyually my monitor dosen't get "turned off" completely. The PC just kicks it into stanby by turning off the video out from the video card. Most Screensavers make me dizzy (LOL I get motion sickness very easy) so I just let it kick into a blank screen.

I have a question...I didnt know where to put it...SD Central occasionally gives us new skins for Windowblinds.
Is there anyway they could tell us what they are called. I have 1000 WB downloaded.(almost)

thank you so much for the firefox section

also to install .jar files on your computer, you can open the themes menu in firefox, then drag a .jar file into it, and it will install

Developer joeKnowledge & reindeer057 Thanks ever so much for the imformation. I will try for sure, like I said I have loads of Firefox skins that are just sitting and need to be used!...LOL

Skinner kona0197, Oh, hey, now Standby is a wonderful thing, I use that for sure....but for when I'm going to be away for a while...which is only when I'm sleeping...LOL

Penguin2254, I don't know what iSpin is, but what would they put in a IconX section?

bkpeck, I'm not sure what you are asking...what is the name of the WBs that you get through SD Central? Go to the WB folder and look at the WBs folders...Use Details as the view and sort by date, then you look for the date you picked up ths skins in question...
