The work required most likely has no relationship to the number of colours. If (for example) the driver only supports 16 colours and you want more, then it's a driver rewrite regardless
Hey The Windows XP Default Drivers have support greater than 16 Colors.
And Besides if 9x can do it then XP Can Also

Prolem is, Windows isn't loaded yet when Bootscreen is displayed.

9x = DOS + GUI
XP is quite different. I'll take the word of the programers at Stardock.
I didn't like the 16 color crap with BootXP and I definitely didn't like it with Bootscreen either.
You're just spoiled

I reckon some of the screens are pretty amazing given the limits imposed on them.

As with any skin proggy....the trick is to push its limits to extract the best 'mod' possible....not just churn out yet another second-rate version of the default setup
My point exactly.

Bait not taken.

Chas...I mean that the trick to a good skin is to push the limits of the proggy's capabilities.
Think 'Antares' in WB....and not some Luna clone made popularly droll by so many...

I guess I look for graphic quality myself and therefore tend to lean towards programs that actually promote that idea, such as wallpapers, windowblinds and logon studio. To me, 16 color images are a pixelated mess.
I guess the probelm is that it will take a lot of programming work to achieve the 256 or full color Bootscreen. And if people are having unresolvable issues with the current bootscreen version, it would be a mess trying to sell/support a full color version. And as a result, those who don't have those issues are left out using a great program and idea that will never see the light of day. Oh well...

Chas.....image 'quality' need not be dependent on colour depth at all.
There is no reason why a bootskin image in 4 bit cannot be clever and effective....it's just that 'stolen' images of Britney's boobs in 24 bit will not adapt well to 4 bit which is why the section is moderated for such.
To do a 'half decent' job within a skin limitations....be it 4bit colour or fixed image placement a-la WA 2x requires a little 'talent' on the part of the artist/skinner, and not some 'twit' grabbing the first image he/she sees and claiming it's a bootskin.
What I dislike is those people who insist on misrepresenting their bootskins by providing full-colour previews in an attempt to fool the downloader into thinking they are good when infact they are not.
Sure the image is a jpg and therefore 16 million colours...but when it's reduced to 16 and gets seriously degraded it means they cheat, and that's indefensible....and the sign of a poor talent.
Winamp 'skinmaker' skins....aka 'photoskins' are the same thing....some weedy skin application tool fakes it for the newbie and we get Britney's dumb head on a skin for the umpteenth time.  Eventually they will learn to actually create the images from scratch [hopefully] cos they're not accepted here.
The difference between 'pushing limits' and not is the difference between 'Antares' and some dopey default Luna recoloured to purple/whatever and uploaded as if it is something 'new'....
