If WC has extra money lying around!

Since the idea of paying skinners is out, how about the Admins. Some of these people have been busting their buts working on this site for over four years now. All unpaid volunteers. How about kicking some money back to them, weighted for seniority of course. All the hours they put in I think they deserve a cut first and foremost. See how that works, if it goes well try bringing skinners into the mix.

This place would be nothing without the admins who give their time and efforts to keep it intact and funcitioning, I like your idea far more, it's time the Admins got something for all of their hard work.

Thanks for thinking of us.... The thing is, if we get paid, it would seem like work rather than something we do because we love it. Also, it's actually quite an honour to be asked to be a Moderator on the best skinning site there is, and I doubt that money is a driving factor for any of the mods on here.

I would hope that the admins and moderators at least get OD and any other programs they would want to use for free.

I agree with BoXXi on his comment that if they were paid,it would feel more like work then something done because you like to do it. Not that I think they shouldn't be paid but that is a very good point.

Indeed. Frankly I wouldn't want to be paid.  Right now, we don't feel too guilty on periods where we are too busy, or tired and take a little break.  But if we were to get paid, we'd HAVE to come and WORK every day. No, I'd rather not feel like I HAVE to do it.

Yes, we do have a few goodies though, of course.

As a GrandPrix Official I'm often asked whether we're paid a lot.....generally people are amazed it's voluntary.....we pay travel, accommodation, etc, just like the spectators.

Of course, however.....I've always imagined that 'ideal world' where your 'hobby' does allow you to eat as well as smile....eg touring around the world following the GP circus working all the tracks and being paid to do it.

Such 'utopia' is seldom realized.

BTW....I've been around here too long....this Americani'z'ed use of 'z'....just not good enough.....'realised'.....Spell checker

Ask Tiger Woods or any pro athlete if he or she still gets the same enjoyment out of playing the sport now vs. when they were a kid. When a hobbie or special ineterest becomes a responsibility, the sense of fun changes. Well maybe the fun doesnt change but there is just more aggravation.

Dunno about that....a Motor Racing Official has a LOT of responsibility....whether paid or not makes no difference...the 'duty of care' is to the sport, either way....

As usual Jafo has an interesting perspective. Good point but if you had to get up every day and practice your routine as an official for 6 - 8 hrs a day, the fun surrounding the whole experience would be tarnished in some sort of way dontcha think? If someone called you and asked why you didnt show up for voluntary practice today, wouldn't you be a little discouraged?
The "duty of care" is a very important point but you can still appreciate the sport from a distance the same as you always have, regardless of if your are an official or not. If being an official adds to your enjoyment of the sport, all the power to you. You have managed to find a rare place in this world. Your a very lucky man.
Helping new skinners at the skinartistry workshop has been a huge pleasure. However I dont see myself continuing to do it if people start to complain, whine, or expect it of me.

Well, you might not get "paid" in the official sense, but I think that a monthly gift of, I dunno, 30 bucks, might not be a bad idea. Either that, or free stardock stuff. Free t-shirts for all the admins!

I had an opportunity to be a professional fisherman, but chose not to, for this very reason. I would start to resent doing what I love to do if I were forced to do it to eat. Hobbies are hobbies because they take us away from work and let us unwind. If you have to perform your hobby for a living, then you need to take up another hobby to relax. Of course, Tiger Wood green would make it easier

If you think about it, everything we do to make money starts off as a hobby. Playing music is a hobby, until you get a paying gig. Most people desire getting paid to do what they enjoy doing as a hobby. Most people study in school, the subject that they are interested in pursuing. It is just a hobby until you get paid to do it. But, I agree, some things are best left as hobbies. And they soil if one seeks payment. For example, when I volunteered to help the homeless, it would have felt real weird if someone wanted to pay me to do it. Sometimes, it feels much better and you get better satisfaction (money isn't everything) when you volunteer for something and do not get paid.

goodmorphing has been trying to get a handle on the idea of 'extra money laying around'. 

...my money doesn't get much chance to lay anywhere, in fact my money nearly flies.

But, yeah... things change a lot when pay comes into the picture.  I do feel guilty for not doing enough... sometimes even when I am doing all I can.  There is this certain freedom that comes from voluntary action that is kind of hard to define.

....and there comes a fear of not being able to measure up to the honor.

So, I never get anywhere with money. I just LIKE to do what I do. The only thing I get other then that is free food!

NightTrain2002.....I'll show you my email sometime.....it can be sorted under 'complain', 'whine' and 'expect'.

Chas....what I do to make money never started out as a hobby....it started out as a career choice. 32 years ago it [Architecture] was a significantly different animal to what beaurocracy has devolved it into these days....to the point that I couldn't honestly recommend it to future eager prospects.

Anyway, as goodmorphing mentioned....it's not as if there is 'spare money' laying around....it was all about Frogboy/Stardock wanting to return 'something' back to those skinners who do most to provide the content which they [and we] all benefit from.

Somehow that got screwed up in the translation to the point there's second thoughts about justifying what would still actually be an expense that Stardock was to be wearing....not 'spare cash' at all....

I can only go back about 15 yrs but I can sure back that one up.

I think everyone understood the gesture Frogboy was making. If I had any part in the negativity, I apologize, I didn't mean to be against the grain. I was just trying to foresee how things may go.

 hehe.... we already have hats, T-Shirts, software, games etc, plus, Stardock have sent me a brilliant Christmas present every year since I've been a moderator here.

 They really are VERY good to us you know.
